Chapter 2.6

Elm outlined the route with quick gestures on a map spread across his desk. "From here to Cherrygrove City first, then north. Mr. Pokémon lives just outside the city proper."

"Keep a reasonable pace," he added, "and you'll reach him well before evening."

"And if I don't?" Ravina asked, already calculating the distance.

"Stay in Cherrygrove," Mrs. Elm interjected immediately. "There are inns near the Pokémon Center."

Professor Elm nodded. "Don't try unfamiliar roads after dark."

Ravina glanced down at Cinder, who had settled beside her foot. "You really think it's that dangerous?"

"Not usually." Elm's gaze softened as it landed on the small Fire-type. "But a partner Pokémon isn't just for battling other trainers." Cinder perked up at his name. "They watch things you don't. Hear things first."

Ravina's fingers brushed Cinder's back. "And if something decides I'm lunch?"

Professor Elm's smile was faint. "Then hopefully Cinder convinces it otherwise." The little Cyndaquil puffed his chest out proudly, tiny flames flickering along his back.

"Look at you," Ravina laughed, scratching behind his ears. Cinder practically preened.

Professor Elm handed her a small parcel wrapped in brown paper. "This is for Mr. Pokémon."

Ravina turned it over. "What's inside?"

"Research notes," Elm paused. "Mostly."

Nostus's eyes narrowed. "Mostly?"

"Nothing dangerous."

"Professor."

"Nothing dangerous."

Nostus continued staring until Elm sighed. "I'll give you the inventory sheet."

"Thank you."

Ravina watched the exchange, concern growing. "Do I want to know?"

"No." Both answered at once.

Chapter 2.7

No Poké Balls rattled in her bag, no trainer kit, stack of potions or empty badge case. Ravina wasn't beginning a Gym Challenge. Not yet.

For now she carried water, food, the parcel, emergency supplies, her Pokégear… and one Cyndaquil.

That was enough.

At the laboratory door, Nostus stopped her. "Ravina."

She looked back as her mother's teasing expression had softened. "Check in when you reach Cherrygrove."

"I will."

"And don't rush."

"I know."

"If Cinder gets tired, stop."

Ravina glanced down. Cinder was already pawing impatiently at the ground, tiny flames flickering along his back. "He seems fine."

"For now." Nostus smiled. "Several hours is different from several minutes."

Ravina nodded. "I'll look after him."

Nostus's gaze shifted toward Cinder. "And you." The little Pokémon looked up at her. "Look after my daughter."

Cinder stared for a moment, then gave one determined little chirp.

Ravina's eyebrows rose. "Traitor."

Nostus laughed. "Good boy."

Chapter 2.8

Outside New Bark's neat streets, the road unwound westward, stretching toward rolling green fields that dissolved into hazy woodland. Ravina shifted her pack higher on her shoulder, the leather creaking softly in the quiet morning. At her side, Cinder stood perfectly still, his small body radiating warmth against her leg.

For a suspended moment, neither moved. This wasn't some grand adventure—she was just delivering a parcel. Yet the morning light caught dust motes dancing in the air, and the horizon seemed to pulse with possibility.

Ravina glanced down at the Fire-type whose tiny flames now flickered along his back. "You ready?"

Cinder met her gaze for a heartbeat, then took a decisive step forward, his determined stride carrying them both forward.

Ravina laughed, the sound bright in the still air. "Apparently." She fell into step beside him, their shadows stretching long before them as they left New Bark behind.

Chapter 2.9

From the laboratory window, Nostus watched Ravina and Cinder disappear toward the town's edge as Mrs. Elm joined her. "You don't seem worried."

Nostus folded her arms, gaze unwavering. "Oh, I'm worried."

"Then why send her?"

"Because she's eighteen." Nostus watched as Ravina paused, noticing Cinder's distraction near the roadside. Instead of hurrying him along, Ravina simply waited, allowing him to explore before he hurried to catch up. "And because if I'm standing beside her every time something happens… she won't find out what she can do without me."

Mrs. Elm nodded thoughtfully. "That's difficult."

"Extremely." The silence stretched for a moment before Mrs. Elm glanced sideways at her. "You know, for someone who's spent the morning threatening my husband's filing cabinets..."

Nostus looked over.

"...you're surprisingly sentimental."

"Don't tell anyone."

Mrs. Elm laughed, the sound warm and knowing.

Chapter 2.10

Ten minutes from New Bark's edge, Cinder's attention snagged on the tall grass bordering the road, wild, untamed, and clearly fascinating to a creature who'd never seen it. His nose twitched, sampling the scents carried on the breeze, while Ravina watched his growing curiosity with amusement.

Then came the rustle, not wind, not leaves, but something alive moving within the dense undergrowth. Cinder froze, every muscle tensing as his body went rigid against Ravina's leg.

"What is it?" Ravina whispered, her own senses sharpening.

Before she could finish, a Rattata burst from the grass, a flash of purple fur and chattering teeth as it scrambled to a halt, equally surprised by their sudden encounter. For a heartbeat, both sides stared, the silence stretching with uncertainty.

Cinder moved. Not with aggression, but with deliberate purpose, stepping directly between Ravina and the wild Pokémon. His back ignited, not in a raging inferno, but in a sudden, brilliant flare that painted the road in dancing orange light.

The flames weren't enormous, but they were immediate. The Rattata recoiled, ears flattening against its skull as Cinder emitted a sharp warning cry, high-pitched, determined, and utterly clear.

One look at the small fire-type defending its territory, and the wild creature made its decision. With a panicked squeak, it dove back into the grass, vanishing as quickly as it had appeared.

Silence returned, broken only by the soft crackle of Cinder's flames and Ravina's exhale. Cinder remained planted firmly before her, a tiny guardian with glowing embers along his back.

Ravina stared at his protective stance before slowly crouching behind him. "Cinder?"

He glanced back, and at the sound of her voice, the flames immediately shrank, receding to mere embers.

"Were you... protecting me?"

At her question, Cinder's posture straightened slightly, his chest puffing with pride. As the last flames disappeared, Ravina reached down, her fingers finding the sensitive spot behind one ear nub.

"Good boy."

Cinder leaned into her touch, his warmth seeping into her fingertips. Something deeper settled in Ravina's chest, not the residual heat from his flames, but an unexpected warmth spreading through her. Less than an hour together, and already he'd instinctively placed himself between her and something he perceived as a threat.

Ravina scooped him up, and Cinder immediately melted against her, nose finding the familiar hollow of her collarbones. "Alright," she murmured, resuming her walk. "You can ride for a bit."

Cinder made absolutely no objection, his contented sigh vibrating against her skin.

Chapter 2.11

The red-haired boy lingered across from the laboratory, his gaze fixed on the building where the girl had disappeared with her chosen Pokémon. Inside, Professor Elm's assistant bustled through paperwork, while the professor himself remained buried in research. The boy's eyes narrowed on the window, where two Poké Balls rested in their tray. His attention snagged on the one containing the energetic Totodile, a predator's glint in his eyes. With one final glance around, he melted into the shadows along the laboratory's side wall, disappearing from view.

Ravina never saw him.

She was already well beyond New Bark Town...

Walking toward Cherrygrove with Cinder asleep against her chest...

Completely unaware that by the time she returned, everything at Professor Elm's laboratory would have changed.

Chapter 2.5

The first Pokémon materialized in a gentle cascade of light, resolving into a Chikorita who landed with soft precision on the polished floor. Her large crimson eyes blinked once, slowly, before tilting upward to study Ravina. The leaf atop her head swayed with an almost hypnotic rhythm, emitting a subtle fragrance like fresh-cut grass after rain.

"Oh." Ravina dropped to one knee, her movements deliberate to avoid startling the small creature. "Hello there."

Chikorita approached with measured steps, her nose twitching as she sampled the air around Ravina's outstretched fingers. After a moment's consideration, she pressed her head against Ravina's hand and released a cheerful chirp that sounded like tiny bells.

Ravina's lips curved into a genuine smile as she stroked the smooth leaf. "You're absolutely adorable."

Professor Elm beamed, his chest puffing slightly. "She thrives on affection."

The second Poké Ball clicked open, and a blur of blue burst forth with explosive energy.

"Totodile!" a guttural cry echoed through the lab as the small water-type materialized. Ravina had barely registered the flash of sharp teeth before the creature launched into motion, bounding across the polished floor with reckless abandon. He circled Professor Elm once before redirecting his momentum toward a nearby chair, his powerful legs coiling as he prepared to pounce.

Mrs. Elm's hand shot out with practiced reflexes, steadying the chair just as Totodile careened to a halt directly before Ravina. His wide jaws snapped playfully, creating sharp clacks in the quiet room as he stared up at her, a mischievous grin stretching across his snout.

Ravina took a measured step back, her lips twitching despite herself. "...You're a walking disaster, aren't you?"

"Most definitely," Professor Elm chuckled from across the room as the Totodile punctuated his agreement with another happy snap of his jaws.

Then came the third ball.

Professor Elm's fingers paused over it. "This one might take a little patience," he murmured as the Poké Ball opened.

A small Cyndaquil materialized, instantly recoiling as though the open air itself threatened him. He pressed himself close to the floor, eyes narrowing to cautious slits.

No flames erupted. No cheerful chirp. Only stillness as Ravina and the Pokémon measured each other from across the room.

Professor Elm rubbed the back of his neck. "He's always been a little shy."

"With everyone?"

"Most people."

Ravina lowered herself into a crouch. Cyndaquil tensed immediately, muscles coiled beneath his dark fur.

She froze, hand resting on her knee rather than reaching toward him.

"That's alright."

His nose twitched, sampling her scent from across the floor. Behind Ravina, the adults had fallen silent. Then—one tentative paw slid forward. Another followed. Cyndaquil advanced in measured increments, pausing every few steps to reassess the human before him.

Ravina remained perfectly still until he reached her. He leaned forward, nose brushing her fingers, and decided to stay there. The corner of Ravina's mouth lifted.

"Hi there."

A slight tilt of his head answered her. Slowly, she turned her hand palm-up, allowing another sniffing inspection. Then one tiny paw pressed against her fingers.

Something about that simple gesture struck Ravina with unexpected force. It wasn't dramatic—he hadn't launched himself into her arms or proclaimed her his favorite person through some magical connection.

He had simply decided she was safe enough to touch.

Ravina's finger traced along the edge of his paw.

"You're nervous, aren't you?" she asked softly as his nose bumped her hand again. She laughed quietly. "Yeah, I think I like you."

Cyndaquil lifted his head, and for the first time, a tiny line of flame flickered along his back.

Professor Elm's eyebrows climbed toward his hairline. Mrs. Elm's smile widened. Nostus simply watched, expression unreadable.

Ravina scratched gently beneath Cyndaquil's chin. His eyes closed in contentment, flames remaining—warm and steady, not defensive in the slightest.

"I believe that's your answer." Professor Elm's voice softened, drawing Ravina's attention from the small creature.

"My answer?"

"Which Pokémon you're meant to take." His smile remained gentle as he gestured with his chin toward the Fire-type.

She returned her gaze to Cyndaquil, who had pressed closer, his entire body now leaning into her palm. "...I should spend more time with them all."

"Sometimes connections form instantly." Mrs. Elm's voice carried warmth. "Often, they choose us before we choose them."

Ravina considered this, then carefully slid both hands beneath the small body. She waited for any sign of resistance—none came. As she lifted him, Cyndaquil curled instinctively toward her warmth, his nose finding the hollow between her collarbones.

Ravina blinked, then a slow smile spread across her face.

"Well," she murmured, looking down at the creature nestled against her chest. "I suppose you're coming with me."

A soft trill answered her, vibrating against her skin, and Ravina laughed.

"You'll need a name."

His eyes opened at her voice, the flames along his back having died away, though she could still feel his warmth through the thin fabric of her shirt.

"...Cinder." She tested the name. "Cinder?"

The Cyndaquil tilted his head, considering the sound, then pressed his nose firmly beneath her chin in what felt unmistakably like approval.

Mrs. Elm laughed softly. "I'd say he likes it."

"Cinder it is." Ravina's grin widened as she nuzzled the small Pokémon.

Nostus finally stepped closer, her shadow falling over them. Cinder looked up. And up. And farther up still. The tiny Fire-type stiffened, his body going rigid against Ravina's chest.

Nostus noticed immediately and lowered herself into a crouch—still taller than most people standing.

"Hello, Cinder."

He stared at her extended finger, then glanced back at Ravina as if seeking permission. Ravina smiled.

"She's alright," she confirmed with a slight nod.

After a moment's hesitation, Cinder touched his nose to Nostus's fingertip. Nostus grinned. "Good."

Then she turned her attention fully to her daughter. "Try not to lose him."

"Mum."

"I mean it."

"I'm not going to lose my Pokémon."

"Excellent." She clapped once as she rose. "That's one item off my list."

Ravina groaned, burying her face against Cinder's soft fur.

Chapter 2.3

Inside the laboratory, Professor Elm paced with restless energy. "Ravina!" He hurried over the moment she stepped inside. "Perfect timing!"

Mrs. Elm glided in from a side room, a tea tray balanced gracefully. "Good morning, dear."

"Morning," Ravina replied, her wariness evident as she watched the professor's manic movements.

"Tea?"

"Please." The smaller girl nodded, accepting the warm cup with both hands.

Mrs. Elm's gaze drifted fondly toward her husband. "Professor Elm has had three cups already."

"I needed them," he protested, adjusting his glasses.

"You forgot the first two existed."

"...That too."

From somewhere deeper in the building came the sound of a filing cabinet opening, followed by Nostus's voice. "Professor?"

Professor Elm froze mid-step. "...Yes?"

"Why is there a grant application from three years ago inside a textbook?" He looked thoughtful for a moment. "...Which textbook?"

Nostus appeared in the doorway, holding both items. "That isn't the part I'm concerned about."

Mrs. Elm smiled as Ravina accepted her tea. "I've decided this is going to be my entertainment while we're here."

Nostus pointed at her with the folder. "Go have your adventure."

"I'm going," Ravina retorted, taking a sip of tea.

"Good."

Professor Elm cleared his throat. "Actually, about that." He motioned for Ravina to follow him. "You shouldn't travel the route alone."

Ravina frowned. "I'm eighteen."

"That's not what I mean." Professor Elm's tone shifted subtly. "The main roads around New Bark are safe, comparatively speaking. Rangers patrol them and other travelers use them."

He opened a door leading into one of the laboratory's smaller rooms. "But they're still wild routes."

Ravina looked inside and saw three Poké Balls that rested on a padded tray.

Professor Elm continued. "Most wild Pokémon avoid people." He picked up one of the balls. "Most."

Mrs. Elm leaned against the doorway behind them. "You don't need to be frightened of them."

"No." Professor Elm shook his head. "But you do need to respect them."

Ravina's eyes drifted toward the Poké Balls. "So you're lending me one?"

"Wait, if you're lending me one, why not just give me one of your Pokémon?" Ravina asked pointedly at Nostus, whose first response was a raised eyebrow.

"Ravina, my team is a pack of veterans."

"Exactly! You have six!"

"Six veteran Pokémon who've spent years developing very strict opinions about whose orders they'll follow."

Ravina folded her arms. "...I'm your daughter."

"Which means they love you." Nostus smiled. "It doesn't mean they respect you as a trainer."

Ravina's ears lowered. "...Rude."

"Besides, they're all girls. It's not as though I've got spare Eggs lying around."

"Then what am I supposed to do?"

Nostus nodded toward the ball in Professor Elm's hand.

"Start where I did."

Ravina puffed out her cheeks.

"...Fine."

Nostus grinned.

"There's my little Pokémon Master."

"Don't patronize me."

Chapter 2.4

Professor Elm's smile carried the warmth of someone genuinely passionate about his work. "Ahem, now that's settled." He placed the Poké Ball back on its velvet cushion with deliberate care. "These three have been raised here under my supervision."

"For your evolution research?" Ravina asked, her gaze still fixed on the trio of pristine spheres, each gleaming under the lab's fluorescent lights.

"Among other studies." His expression softened as he watched her fascination. "But I want you to understand—they're not laboratory equipment."

Ravina turned from the display case to meet his eyes, curiosity evident in her expression.

"They need partners," he continued, voice gentle but firm.

The statement caught her off guard. "Permanently?"

"If the bond feels right to both of you." Professor Elm's smile widened. "True partnerships shouldn't begin with paperwork..." Behind Ravina, Nostus cleared her throat pointedly, causing the professor to wince. "...Although apparently they do involve paperwork."

"They absolutely do." Nostus folded her arms, posture radiating bureaucratic authority. "Especially when the professor hasn't updated his transfer protocols since-"

"Nostus." Mrs. Elm's touch on her arm was light but effective. "Let her meet them first."

Nostus glanced from Ravina to the Poké Balls, then offered a wry smile. "Fair enough."

Professor Elm exhaled audibly with relief. "Right." He reached for the first ball. "Let's start here."

Chapter 2.2

New Bark stirred to life as Ravina stepped into the morning, the town transformed by golden light that softened the edges of buildings and painted the streets in warm hues. Yesterday's arrival had felt temporary; today, the town seemed to settle around her like a familiar blanket.

Shopkeepers wrestled with stubborn awnings, their movements practiced in the dawn routine. A cyclist pedaled past, the rhythmic squeak of his wheels accompanying the whir of spokes as parcels jostled in his basket. Down the lane, two children scurried toward the shoreline, fishing rods towering over them like slender giants.

Ravina followed the familiar path toward Professor Elm's laboratory, a jaunty whistle escaping her lips as she walked. She was nearly at the gate when she noticed him.

A boy stood motionless by the fence, red hair catching the morning sun like embers against his dark clothing. His arms were folded tightly across his chest, his gaze fixed not on the road but on the laboratory, more precisely, one specific window.

Ravina's pace slowed. He looked out of place here, his sharp features and guarded demeanor at odds with the town's gentle rhythm. She'd seen no one like him yesterday.

"Waiting for Professor Elm?"

His head snapped toward her, eyes narrowing like a predator's. They were sharp, calculating, and immediately defensive.

"...No."

The single word stopped Ravina in her tracks. "Oh."

Silence stretched between them as she glanced toward the laboratory and back. "You've been staring through his window."

"I haven't."

"You are right now."

His expression hardened further, jaw tightening. "What do you want?"

"Nothing." Ravina shrugged, casual despite the tension. "Just making conversation."

"Then stop."

Ravina blinked. "...Charming."

He turned away abruptly, his posture a clear dismissal. The conversation was over.

Ravina considered pressing further but decided the morning was too pleasant to waste on hostile strangers. She started toward the gate. "Well. Enjoy your... whatever this is."

The boy remained silent.

As she reached the laboratory door, she felt his eyes on her, a brief, piercing moment before he returned his attention to the window, resuming his silent vigil.

Travel Journal — Day 2

Mum said Professor Elm only needed one small favour.

I've learned that when adults say “small favour,” they usually mean something that somehow takes the entire day.

Still... I get to meet one of Professor Elm's Pokémon today, So I suppose I can't complain too much.

Chapter 2.1

Morning arrived in New Bark Town not with a sudden blaze, but with the gentle insistence of gulls calling over the rhythmic hush of waves against the shore. Ravina's eyes fluttered open to the unfamiliar ceiling, the events of yesterday filtering back slowly: Johto, New Bark, Professor Elm, and her mother's mysterious errand. She groaned, rolling onto her side as sounds from downstairs drifted upward, cupboards opening, the clink of ceramic, and footsteps with far too much energy for this hour. Nostus.

When Ravina reached the kitchen, her mother was already a portrait of efficiency. Dressed for work in her open white coat, Nostus cradled a coffee mug while the dining table had transformed overnight into a command center. Folders stood in neat stacks, some sporting colored tabs, one even boasting a handwritten index taped to its cover.

Ravina froze halfway into the room. "...You've been awake for how long?"

Nostus glanced at the clock. "Long enough."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you're getting."

Ravina shuffled toward the cupboards. "You've been here one day."

"An astute observation."

"And you've already reorganized Professor Elm's paperwork."

"Not reorganized." Nostus sipped her coffee. "Triaged."

Ravina stared at the organized chaos. "That sounds worse."

"It is."

She fumbled in the breadbox, dropping two slices into the toaster with a clatter. "So how bad is it?"

Nostus's expression became very still. "...There is a drawer in his office labeled 'Important Things.'"

Ravina waited, butter knife hovering. "And?"

"It contains receipts, three research proposals, an expired ferry ticket, half a sandwich wrapper, and a birthday card he forgot to send four years ago."

Ravina snorted. "You like him already."

"Professionally, he terrifies me."

"Same thing."

Nostus's mouth twitched. "Mrs. Elm asked if you'd come by once you're ready."

"For the errand?"

"Mhm."

"What am I actually doing?"

"Professor Elm can explain it."

Ravina narrowed her eyes. "You know."

"I do."

"And you're not telling me."

"I am practicing restraint."

"That's very mature of you."

"I thought so."

Ravina retrieved her toast and then paused. "How far am I going?"

"Several hours if you walk at a sensible pace."

That got her attention. "...Several?"

"Mr. Pokémon lives beyond Cherrygrove."

Ravina stared at her. "You neglected to mention the part where the 'small favour' involves leaving town."

"I assumed the travelling part would improve your opinion of it." Nostus smiled over her coffee. "You came to Johto to see Johto, remember?"

"I came because you came to Johto."

"Details."

Ravina sighed dramatically. "Fine." she huffed as she took a bite of toast. "But if I'm eaten by something in the woods, I'm haunting you."

"I'd expect nothing less."

Chapter 1.6

That evening, mother and daughter settled into the house the League had arranged for visiting researchers.

It was larger than necessary, spacious enough for Nostus' six veteran Pokémon should she decide to release them from storage. The study had already been claimed as a temporary office, but even so, binders from Elm's laboratory sprawled across half the dining table like a paper avalanche in progress.

Ravina stared at the small mountain of documents before sitting down beside her mother. "...You've been here four hours."

"I'm making progress," Nostus murmured, her focus locked on the document in her hands.

"You're nesting."

"I'm organizing."

"That's what nesting is," Ravina whined, gesturing dramatically at the growing pile.

Nostus simply smiled, her pen never pausing as she continued her assault on Elm's disorganized empire.

- - - - -

Chapter 1.7

The evening settled around them as boxes from the fish and chips shop sat half-empty on the table, the scent of fried cod and malt vinegar hanging in the air between them. Ravina methodically collapsed cardboard while Nostus remained entrenched in Professor Elm's files, her pen scratching against paper with relentless precision.

"Ravina."

"Hm?" She flattened another box with a sigh.

"Professor Elm mentioned something today," Nostus said without looking up.

"Oh?"

"He needs someone to pick up something from an old colleague tomorrow."

Ravina paused, her fingers hovering over the tape dispenser. "...Me?"

"He asked if you'd be interested." Nostus's tone held that parental quality of making requests sound like inevitabilities.

"I've been in Johto for exactly one day," her daughter countered, eyebrow raised.

"Which means you're uniquely qualified."

Ravina laughed, the sound echoing slightly in the spacious room. "I don't think that's how qualifications work."

"No?"

"No."

Nostus finally closed the folder, the soft thud punctuating the conversation. "Professor Elm is looking for some trainer assistants for his Pokémon research."

"Yes? And?"

"He'll probably offer you one."

"One what?"

"A Pokémon."

"What, really?"

"Probably."

"...Probably?" Ravina's fingers stilled completely.

"He seemed to think so."

Ravina blinked, processing.

"...Wait."

Nostus propped her chin in her hand. "You're going to be here for months while I rescue his laboratory from administrative collapse."

"Mhm."

"So… you could spend every day sitting in this house..." She gestured vaguely at the growing paper empire on their dining table. "...or you could see Johto."

The room grew quiet as Ravina's gaze drifted toward the dark window. Outside, the lights of New Bark glimmered like scattered stars, a peaceful scene that suddenly felt more like a launching point than a destination. She'd arrived expecting a long vacation, perhaps some mild sightseeing between complaints about small-town life.

Now... she might be leaving with a Pokémon. A slow smile spread across her face despite herself. "...I suppose one errand couldn't hurt."

Nostus returned the smile, her expression knowing. "I had a feeling you'd say that."

That night, while Ravina drifted off to sleep, the sound of waves rolled gently against New Bark's shoreline.

Tomorrow would begin as an ordinary errand.

Neither Ravina nor anyone else in New Bark yet realized that before the sun set again, three young Pokémon would find his partner, and the quiet little town would become the starting point of three very different journeys.

Chapter 1.3

Professor Elm's laboratory occupied a modest position on the town's edge, its weathered stone facade suggesting years of dedicated research within. The building itself appeared respectable, but the office... the office was another matter entirely. Ravina halted in the doorway beside her mother, her magenta eyes widening as she took in the chaotic landscape before them.

VN Lab Scene 1 1

Every horizontal surface had surrendered to teetering stacks of paper, books lay splayed open across the floor, folders leaned at precarious angles that defied gravity, and sticky notes covered every filing cabinet like colorful migrating birds. Somewhere beneath this avalanche of documentation sat Professor Elm himself.

"Oh!" The professor emerged from behind a tower of documents, his hair slightly disheveled. "You must be Nostus!"

"I sincerely hope so," Ravina's mother replied, extending a hand with professional poise. "Professor Elm?"

He hurried forward, nearly tripping over a cardboard box labeled in faded ink: "Evolution Survey 3... Maybe?"

"Ah, yes! It's wonderful to finally meet you." He shook Nostus's hand with enthusiasm that sent papers fluttering from a nearby pile. "I cannot tell you how grateful I am that you accepted this assignment."

Nostus's gaze swept methodically across the room, her expression maintaining perfect professional composure despite the organizational nightmare before her. "...How long has your filing system looked like this?"

Professor Elm blinked owlishly. "My filing system?"

"...Yes."

"...Oh." He paused, looking around his office as if seeing it for the first time. "Long enough that I don't really notice anymore."

"I see." Nostus turned to Ravina, a faint smile playing at her lips. "I may be here longer than anticipated."

Chapter 1.4

As Ravina struggled to process her mother's extended stay in this quaint town, the lab door swung open. Daphne Elm glided in, balancing a tray with steaming teacups that clinked softly with each step. Her warm brown eyes twinkled with an understanding that suggested she'd witnessed this exact scenario countless times before.

"I'm terribly sorry," she said, her voice carrying a gentle melody that soothed rather than apologized.

Nostus shook her head slightly, reaching for a cup. "No need for apologies."

Daphne laughed, a sound like wind chimes. "Oh, but I think there is." Her gaze drifted to her husband, who had already become completely absorbed in a rediscovered notebook, scribbling furiously while muttering about Pokémon migration patterns. "...He's brilliant, isn't he?"

"Ingenious," Nostus agreed, taking a measured sip. "But also three quarters behind on his compliance documentation."

Daphne sighed with practiced patience, setting down the tray. "Thank you for coming to our rescue."

Nostus's smile widened, genuine and reassuring. "It's what I do. I'll have him sorted soon enough"

Chapter 1.5

The afternoon dissolved beneath an unending mountain of paperwork, at least for the adults. Ravina, after halfheartedly helping carry a few boxes, realized she'd mostly been migrating the same documents from one precarious stack to another. She escaped outside where the breeze carried the crisp scent of the nearby lake, cementing the town's defining qualities: quiet, peaceful, and dreadfully uneventful. Leaning against the rough bark of a tree overlooking the water, she sighed dramatically. "So... My exciting vacation begins."

Chapter 1.1

The train glided into New Bark Town Station under a brilliant spring sky, the gentle hiss of brakes cutting through the quiet morning air.

Ravina Shales pressed her forehead against the cool glass, her breath fogging a small patch as she watched the town emerge. White picket fences lined streets where bicycles leaned against painted porches. Gardens burst with spring blooms—tulips and daffodils swaying in the breeze. Beyond the neat houses, emerald hills rolled upward like sleeping giants, their slopes giving way to dense forests that carpeted the horizon, leading deeper into Johto's wild heart.

It wasn't WilderHolm. Not even close.

"Smaller than I imagined," she murmured, her voice barely audible above the train's rhythm.

Across the aisle, Nostus Shales chuckled without looking up from the paperwork spread across her lap. Her fingers moved with practiced efficiency, organizing documents into neat stacks despite the train's gentle sway.

"You've said that about every town since we crossed into Johto."

"Because everything is smaller," Ravina insisted, turning from the window to face her mother. "The buildings, the streets, even the sky seems lower."

"The cities aren't," Nostus countered, finally glancing up. Her dark eyes held a warmth that contrasted with her sharp features.

"The train station definitely is."

"It serves its purpose with one platform," Nostus said, securing the last document with a paperclip before tucking everything into her briefcase.

Ravina crossed her arms, her shoulders slumping dramatically. "I was expecting something grander. At least three platforms, maybe a clock tower."

The train emitted its final hiss as it settled into position. Nostus rose in one fluid motion, her movements economical and precise. She slipped the briefcase's strap over her shoulder, the white lab coat, still crisp despite the journey, billowing slightly as the automatic doors slid open, revealing the platform.

Fresh air drifted inside, carrying the scent of damp earth and new growth.

"Come on," Nostus said, stepping onto the platform without looking back. "Professor Elm is expecting us."

Chapter 1.2

New Bark Town breathed a different kind of peace. Laughter echoed as children wove through streets where elderly neighbors exchanged greetings over well-tended flowerbeds. Down by the shore, a fisherman's weathered hands worked steadily at his nets, the rhythmic motion a familiar sight to passersby. The rich scent of baking bread from a nearby shop wove through the morning air, a warm invitation that made Ravina's stomach rumble.

Compared to the sprawling, impersonal cities Ravina knew, New Bark existed on a human scale—where faces were familiar and the pace of life matched the gentle roll of the surrounding hills.

"...I suppose I could get used to this," Ravina admitted reluctantly, watching a Pidgey land on a fence post with an inquisitive tilt of its head.

"I told you," Nostus replied, her tone holding just enough satisfaction to tease.

"I didn't say I wanted to stay forever," Ravina countered, kicking at a loose stone on the path.

"No." Nostus's smile softened the edges of her response. "But you stopped complaining."
