Poke Ravina R32 16

Chapter 28.9

The cave changed as they neared its southern exit, the air growing warmer, carrying whispers of vegetation pushing through stone fractures, the sound of outside wind threading beneath the cavern's deep echo.

Toni noticed first, her small head turning toward the faint glow ahead. LIGHT. Her concept bloomed through their connection, immediate and excited.

Ravina smiled down at her. "Real one this time."

Nikola's tail dimmed at the approaching daylight, her careful illumination becoming unnecessary against the growing brightness.

They rounded the final bend.

Union Cave's mouth opened onto Route 33, daylight flooding the passage as Ravina stepped out. Then stopped.

She looked back. No collapse, no swarm, no desperate rope work or emergency lantern needed, no wild attacks requiring defense. One Repel used entirely out of spite. Nikola had maintained Flash for maybe twenty minutes total, mostly because Ravina had wanted to justify the training effort. Victor had counted exactly eight hundred and twenty lamps before she threatened increasingly creative consequences.

Ravina surveyed the cave entrance, then looked up at the sky, then at her gathered team.

"I may have overprepared."

Victor materialized behind her. "Impossible."

Ravina glanced back at him. Nikola's tail bulb flickered with what might have been amusement. Cinder stretched in the welcome sunlight, dark teal body absorbing the warmth. Owlbert soared ahead, circling once before settling on a nearby post. Toni chirped from her sling, delighted by the sudden brightness.

Ravina sighed. "Fine." She adjusted her pack straps. "I definitely overprepared."

Victor's spectral form brightened. "But?"

Ravina looked back at the dark entrance, then down at Toni in her sling. "But I'd rather do that than the other way around."

Victor's smile softened. "Distressingly sensible."

"Don't get used to it."

"I treasure these rare events."

Chapter 28.10

Route 33 stretched before them, a winding path that felt almost insultingly brief after the days they'd spent on the road since Violet city. The trail traced the mountain's base through dewy grass and sparse woodland, the air carrying the cool dampness of approaching cloud cover, not storm-heavy, just enough to keep the temperature gentle.

Ravina consulted her map twice, fingers tracing the line to Azalea with increasing suspicion at how quickly their destination neared. The familiar procession continued: Cinder trotting alongside her, dark teal body absorbing the morning light; Nikola moving with steady purpose; Toni alternating between the sling and burrowing into Nikola's fleece; Victor drifting lazily ahead; Owlbert hopping from branch to branch in characteristic surveillance.

No wild encounters. No unexpected complications.

Ravina found herself questioning when the other shoe would drop.

Then they reached the turnoff, a rough unpaved road diverging toward a rocky hollow, marked by a weathered sign reading "SLOWPOKE WELL." A newer temporary placard beneath it announced "MAINTENANCE ACCESS ONLY."

A woman stood guard, dressed in work trousers, steel-toed boots, gloves, and a reflective vest, her hair pulled back from a face that lifted as they approached.

"Sorry. Closed."

Ravina slowed her pace. "Closed?"

"Maintenance." The worker gestured down the well road. "Loose stone, bad supports, water damage."

Temporary fencing blocked most of the path. Farther down, equipment cluttered the area, crates, tools, a portable lamp. Nothing particularly remarkable.

"Civilians are being redirected into town," the woman continued.

Ravina adjusted Toni's position. "Can I still get through to Azalea?"

"Straight ahead." She pointed ahead on the main path. "You're fine."

Ravina's attention drifted toward the well again as a metallic clank echoed from below, then abruptly stopped. Cinder's nose twitched, ears shifting direction with sudden alertness.

"What is it?" Ravina asked her Quilava.

He sniffed again, orange-red eyes narrowing.

The worker offered a reassuring smile. "Probably the sealant."

Ravina turned to her. "Sealant?"

"Support treatment. They're reinforcing the structure."

The explanation seemed plausible enough. The woman's attire fit the job description, though Ravina noted the absence of official Ranger patches or municipal insignia. Still, her knowledge of local authorities remained limited here.

"How long will this take?" Ravina asked.

"Depends what the engineers find down there."

"Right."

The woman's smile remained friendly, if slightly practiced. "Just don't wander down that road."

Ravina shrugged. "Wasn't planning to."

"Good."

Victor drifted closer, his purple gaseous form hovering just behind Ravina's shoulder. The worker's eyes flicked toward him once, briefly, before returning to Ravina's face.

"Azalea's about twenty minutes ahead," the woman said.

"Thanks."

"No problem."

Ravina continued walking, but Cinder glanced back. So did Victor. The worker remained beside the road, waving another traveler toward town.

Normal. Exactly what maintenance should look like.

Chapter 28.11

Rooftops of Azalea pierced through the trees ahead, tiled slopes catching afternoon light. Ravina shifted the weight of her pack, a slow smile spreading across her face. Toni stirred in her sling, tiny head lifting.

NEW. The concept pulsed through their connection, clean as spring water.

"Yeah." Ravina laughed, the sound bright against the mountain air. "New town."

Her team responded to the approaching civilization in their distinct ways. Cinder moved ahead with renewed energy, dark teal body carrying purpose in every stride. Nikola trotted behind him, fleece crackling with contained excitement, tail bulb pulsing gold even in daylight. Above them, Owlbert vanished toward the rooftops, his wings beating methodically against the sky. Victor drifted alongside Ravina, purple smoke curling in the afternoon breeze.

"Terrifying journey survived," he intoned, voice rich with mock gravity. "Without consuming your emergency rations."

"That doesn't mean I won't strangle you with the rope."

"Painfully predictable, and yet I find myself anticipating the attempt."

Azalea waited ahead, a promise of proper beds and working plumbing after the sterile Ranger Station. A badge. Work. Training. Maybe somewhere to actually use that ridiculous fishing rod Ralph had pawned off on her.

She adjusted Toni's sling, noting how the Togepi's gaze followed the town's silhouette with growing interest.

BIG. The concept arrived quietly, tinged with hope.

"Yeah," Ravina whispered. "hopefully this will be normal for a while."

Chapter 28.12

Behind them at the Slowpoke Well turnoff, the woman in work clothes watched until Ravina's party disappeared around the bend. Her professional smile lingered for thirty seconds after they vanished.

She reached beneath her reflective vest, fingers finding the small radio clipped to her belt.

The button depressed with a soft click.

"Traveler cleared."

Static crackled. "Female?"

"Yes."

"Trainer?"

The woman's gaze drifted toward the empty road. "Five Pokémon visible."

A pause stretched, broken only by the wind whispering through pines.

"Noted."

The radio clicked off.

When the next traveler appeared around the bend, the woman's smile returned, perfectly calibrated. "Sorry. Closed for maintenance."
