Ravina’s Pokémon Adventure (HGSS) Chapter 6

Poke Ravina F 4

Chapter 6

The Boy on the Road

Travel Journal — Day 2

Professor Elm called. Someone broke into the laboratory, he sounded frightened.
Cinder noticed before I even told him.

We’re going home.

The journey back toward Cherrygrove felt nothing like the one Ravina had taken that morning. There were no stops to inspect Apricorn trees, No conversations with passing trainers. No pausing because Cinder had discovered another fascinating bug hiding beneath a leaf.

Ravina had to keep moving.

The Mystery Egg had been carefully wrapped in a spare shirt and secured inside her satchel, cushioned against her side so it wouldn’t be jostled more than necessary. One hand remained protectively over the bag as she hurried down the woodland path as Cinder ran beside her.

For the first twenty minutes he had tried matching Ravina’s pace without complaint. Eventually she noticed his steps beginning to shorten.

“Cinder.” He ignored her.

“Cinder!” The Cyndaquil stubbornly continued.

So Ravina stopped, He made it another three paces before realizing she was no longer beside him.

Cinder turned. “No.”

His ears lowered. “We’re not running you into the ground.”

A protesting chirp. “I know Professor Elm said hurry.”

Another chirp. “And I know you want to get home.”

She crouched and opened her arms. “But you’ve been walking all day.”

Cinder stared at her, then at the road, then back at her. Ravina raised an eyebrow. “Don’t make me come over there.”

He surrendered with a slump before he padded back and allowed Ravina to scoop him up against her chest. “There.”

He grumbled against her. “You can complain all you like.”

Another irritated sound, but Ravina smiled despite herself. “Very intimidating.”

His head settled against her shoulder and within minutes, he was asleep.

Cherrygrove appeared through the trees sometime later. The afternoon city was louder than Ravina remembered, fishing boats returned toward the harbor, vendors called from open shop fronts, Cyclists rolled between pedestrians while Wingull circled noisily overhead.

Ordinary life. But Ravina found the normality strangely unsettling. Professor Elm’s laboratory had been broken into, Someone had frightened him badly enough that his voice had shaken over the phone.

Yet here people were buying bread, arguing over fish prices, laughing outside cafés, the world hadn’t noticed.

Ravina adjusted Cinder in her arms and continued through the city, she considered stopping at the Pokémon Center, but only briefly.

Cinder had fought that morning and travelled most of the day, but he didn’t seem injured, merely tired. The sooner they reached New Bark, the sooner she could find out what had happened.

She crossed the western edge of Cherrygrove, buildings became houses, houses became fields, then the road narrowed between the trees.

Cinder stirred and his head lifted.

“What?” His nose twitched and then his body went tense. Ravina slowed as she saw someone was standing ahead.

A lone figure leaned against the wooden rail bordering the road, hands buried in the pockets of a dark high-collared jacket, Bright red hair caught the afternoon sun.

Ravina stopped. “…Oh.”

The boy from outside Elm’s laboratory looked toward her. His expression immediately soured.

“Again.”

Ravina stared at him, something uncomfortable clicked into place.

Red hair, The laboratory, The break-in. She lowered Cinder to the ground. “You.”

His eyes briefly moved to Cinder. “So you really took that one.”

Ravina frowned. “Took?”

“The Cyndaquil.”

Cinder lowered his stance defensively.

“He has a name.” Ravina retorted.

The boy shrugged. “Doesn’t matter.”

That irritated her considerably more than it should have. “Its Cinder.”

“Whatever.” he muttered dismissively as Ravina stared at him, He was definitely the same person. Same sharp eyes, same miserable expression, same attitude that suggested the entire world had personally inconvenienced him by existing.

She stepped forward. “You were outside Professor Elm’s laboratory this morning.”

“So?”

“So someone broke into Professor Elm’s laboratory.”

That got the smallest reaction.

His gaze hardened at the accusation in her statement, and Ravina noticed. “Do you know anything about that?”

“No.” he replied, a little too quickly.

Ravina’s eyes narrowed. “You sure?”

“I said no.” replied as he pushed himself away from the railing. As he moved, Ravina noticed something clipped at his belt. A Poké Ball.

That hadn’t been there this morning and the sight of it made her stomach tightened. “Where did you get that?”

His hand moved instinctively toward it. “None of your business.”

“It became my business about an hour ago!”

“You think I care?” He stepped closer As Ravina held her ground. “You’re wasting my time.”

“Oh, I’m wasting your time?”

His gaze dropped to Cinder again. “You shouldn't even have that Pokémon.”

Cinder growled and Ravina blinked. “…Excuse me?”

“He’s wasted on you.” The boy continued as though Ravina hadn’t spoken with a casual contempt. “Professor Elm hands Pokémon to anyone who smiles nicely and suddenly they think they’re trainers.”

Ravina’s irritation sharpened. “I never said I was a trainer.”

“That’s obvious.”

“…You are spectacularly unpleasant.”

He scoffed. “The weak don’t matter.”

Ravina went still as Cinder looked up at her. The red-haired boy either didn’t notice the change or didn’t care. “Pokémon are tools for becoming stronger. That’s all that matters.”

His fingers closed around the Poké Ball. “I’ll become stronger than anyone.” He monolouged as he looked directly at Ravina. “The strongest trainer in the world.”

There was complete conviction behind it.a start difference from Joey proudly declaring that Rattata would become incredible someday.

His words were harder, colder. Strength wasn’t something this boy wanted. It was something he seemed to believe entitled him to everything else.

And something about that, Something about the certainty with which he looked down on her, touched a very particular nerve.

Ravina’s expression slowly softened. Not because she was calming down. Quite the opposite. Cinder had seen Ravina angry, He hadn’t yet seen her smile like that. “So?” she asked

The boy frowned. “What?”

Ravina nodded toward the Poké Ball. “You’re strong?”

His eyes narrowed. “Yes.”

“Stronger than me?”

“Obviously.”

Ravina smiled. “Prove it.”

A moment passed and then he smirked.

Finally, something he understood. “Fine.” He replied as he pulled the Poké Ball free. “I’ll show you what a real trainer looks like.”

Ravina sighed. “You really do make it difficult not to dislike you.”

They moved off the road into an open stretch of grass. Cinder stood in front of Ravina as the red-haired boy rolled the Poké Ball once between his fingers.

“You’ll regret this.”

“Mmhm.”

“I mean it.”

“Whenever you’re ready.”

His eyebrow twitched. “Go!” The ball opened and a White light spilled across the clearing, a small blue Pokémon landed heavily in the grass, large jaws, red crest and bright eyes.

“Totodile!”

Ravina froze, Cinder froze too. The Totodile looked around excitedly and then his eyes found Ravina. For a moment his expression changed, recognition.

Ravina remembered those same teeth snapping happily in Professor Elm’s laboratory. The chair nearly fell over. Mrs. Elm caught it.

You’re trouble, aren’t you?

Her gaze slowly lifted. “You stole him.”

The boy’s expression didn’t change. “He was sitting in that laboratory doing nothing.”

“You broke in.”

“He needed a strong trainer.”

“You stole him.”

“I took what I needed.”

Ravina felt that strange coldness return as Cinder’s back ignited. The red-haired boy smiled faintly. “See?” His eyes moved between Cinder and Ravina.

“Even your Pokémon understands.”

Ravina looked down, Cinder wasn’t looking at Totodile, He was glaring at the boy.

“I don’t think he agrees with you.”

“Doesn’t matter.”

The boy pointed forward. “Totodile. Scratch!” Totodile launched himself across the grass towards the fire mouse.

“Cinder, move!” Cinder jumped aside as claws sliced through empty air, then Totodile immediately spun. Fast. Far quicker than Ravina expected from the hyperactive little Pokémon she had met that morning.

“Again!” Totodile lunged, Cinder dodged the first swipe but the second caught his shoulder and he tumbled through the grass.

“Cinder!” The Fire-type rolled and scrambled upright and The other boy smiled.

“That’s the difference between us.” Ravina glanced toward him. “You hesitate.”

Another command. “Scratch!” Totodile charged again, Ravina had to force herself to look away from the trainer and watch the Pokémon. Joey’s battle had taught her something.

The trainer wasn’t the target, the battle was happening between the Pokémon.

Totodile charged directly, aggressive, powerful, but predictable.

“Cinder!” His head turned slightly in recognition. “Smokescreen!” Almost instantly a thick cloud of black smoke erupted across the clearing and Totodile disappeared inside it.

The boy scoffed. “Cheap trick.”

“Still counts.”

“Totodile! Keep going!”

Ravina blinked. Keep going? Totodile did, a blue shape burst blindly through the smoke. Wrong direction, Ravina saw Cinder emerge from the opposite side.

“Circle around!” the boy ordered as Cinder moved. Totodile turned at the sound but it was too late.

“Tackle!” Cinder hit him broadside and Totodile stumbled. Not down. Definitely not down as he swung almost immediately. Cinder ducked under the claws and retreated.

The red-haired boy’s expression tightened. “Again!”

Totodile pursued. Ravina watched. Totodile was stronger than Rattata had been, probably stronger than Cinder. But there was something wrong with the way the battle felt.

The boy commanded and Totodile obeyed. That was it. No adjustment, no encouragement. No communication beyond instructions.

“Scratch!” The boy continued to order and Totodile charged.

“Wait.” Ravina called, Cinder stayed put trusting his partner.

Ravina’s heart hammered, Closer, Closer, “Now!”

Cinder jumped sideways causing Totodile to miss.

“Tackle!” Cinder struck him from behind and Totodile crashed into the grass.

He rose again, Slower. The boy’s jaw clenched.

“Get up.” Totodile shook himself. “Again.”

Ravina frowned as The Water-type hesitated.

“Totodile!” He pushed himself forward.

Cinder was breathing hard too, Ravina could feel the battle reaching its end. One clean hit either way.

The boy pointed. “Finish it!”

Totodile charged and Ravina waited.

Cinder looked back at her, For half a second, their eyes met and Ravina understood. “Smokescreen.”

The boy’s eyes widened, again the clearing disappeared into black. Totodile plunged straight into it.

“Don’t stop!”

Ravina smiled, there, that was the mistake.

“Cinder, listen for him.” Cinder lowered himself, Inside the smoke came pounding footsteps. Then. “Left!” Cinder moved as Totodile burst through and Missed.

“Tackle!” Cinder drove directly into Totodile’s side. The Water-type rolled twice and landed flat in the grass and then silence.

The smoke slowly drifted away.

Totodile tried to push himself upright, one arm trembled beneath him, then gave out.

Ravina raised her hand. “That’s enough.”

The boy’s expression hardened. “Get up.” Totodile didn’t, he couldn’t

“Totodile.” Ravina stepped forward. “Hey.” The Water-type’s eyes shifted toward her, there was a recognition there as Ravina crouched and slowly extended one hand. “Come here.”

The boy looked sharply at her. “What are you doing?”

Ravina ignored him. “You remember me, don’t you?”

Totodile stared. “Professor Elm’s waiting for you back home.” For just a moment, Ravina thought he might move, and then Totodile dragged himself upright. But not toward her. To put himself between her and the boy

Ravina stopped. She could see that Totodile’s legs were shaking badly, but his jaws opened in warning. “...Totodile?”

A weak growl answered her. Cinder immediately moved to Ravina’s side, flames flickering again. But Ravina understood. It didn’t matter where the boy had gotten him. Somewhere between New Bark and this road, Totodile had decided something for himself.

the boy was his trainer.

Ravina ravina bit her lip in frustration, she could order Cinder forward. Totodile could barely stand, so one more clean hit would probably put him down completely.

Maybe then she could carry him home. But the thought made something twist unpleasantly in her stomach. She would have to hurt him because he refused to abandon his trainer.

Possibly badly.

And judging by the way Totodile planted himself between them despite trembling legs, he wasn’t going to stop simply because he was losing.

Ravina slowly lowered her hand. “Okay.”

Totodile remained where he was. “I’m not going to make you.” His posture eased only slightly as Ravina looked past him and towards the boy.

“But if you’re going to call yourself his trainer...” Her expression hardened. “Then start acting like one.”

The red-haired boy’s face twisted into a mask of Frustration as he recalled Totodile in a flash of red light.

For several seconds nobody spoke. Cinder stood panting in the grass and Ravina crouched immediately.

“You alright?” He chirped, tired, but proud. Ravina scratched gently beneath his chin. “You were brilliant.” causing His eyes to close briefly.

Then Ravina stood and looked toward the other trainer. He was staring at the Poké Ball in his hand. “…Impossible.”

Ravina smiled. “Oh?”

His eyes snapped toward her.

“You were saying something about weak trainers?”

“Shut up.”

“No, no.”

She started toward him. “I distinctly remember a speech.”

His expression darkened. “You got lucky.”

“Probably.” Another step.

“It won't happen again.”

“Maybe.” Another.

“I’m stronger than you.”

Ravina stopped directly in front of him, He was considerably taller that she had to tilt her head back to meet his gaze, Ordinarily she might have found that annoying.

Right now, she liked it. Because he wasn’t moving.

“So strong.” Her voice had changed. Not dramatically, but it was just enough, the anger was still there. But beneath it was something darkly playful, sharper, predatory.

His eyes narrowed. “What?”

Ravina smiled. “You've spent the last ten minutes telling me how strength is all that matters.”

“It is.”

“And the stronger person gets to do what they want?”

“That’s not what I—”

“Oh?” She stepped slightly closer and he stopped speaking.

Interesting.Ravina had expected another insult. Instead he seemed suddenly very conscious of the distance between them. Or lack of it as Her smile widened. “Something wrong?”

“No.”

“You went quiet.”

“I’m deciding whether you're an idiot.”

“Mm.” Ravina’s eyes travelled deliberately from his face, down the front of his jacket, then slowly back upward. The effect was immediate as a faint flush appeared across his cheeks.

Ravina almost laughed. Oh. There was something underneath all that arrogance after all. He noticed her noticing his discomfort and his expression became murderous.

“What are you looking at?”

“You.”

“Why?”

Ravina leaned just slightly nearer. “Because you're cute when you're losing.”

His face went scarlet. “I am not—”

Ravina cut him off with a laugh, It slipped out before she could stop herself. “Oh, that's adorable.”

“Shut up!” There it was, the same anger, but now she understood something about it that she hadn’t before.

He wasn’t merely angry, she had embarrassed him.

And Ravina, to her own slight surprise, found that very entertaining.

“You know…” Her voice dropped. “If you really believe strength gives someone the right to take whatever they want…”

His glare sharpened as Ravina maintained the small distance between them without touching him.

“…you should be much more careful about saying things like that to someone who just beat you.”

For the first time since she'd met him, the boy had absolutely nothing to say. Ravina felt a darker little thrill curl pleasantly through her, she knew that feeling, that impulse to poke. Push. See exactly where someone’s confidence broke.

Usually Ravina preferred being on the other side of games like that. But apparently this boy brought out something different.

She tilted her head. “Come on.”

His jaw tightened.

“You’re the strongest, remember?” Ravina continued as her smile sharpened. “Don't let little old me make you nervous.”

“I’m not nervous.”

“Then why are you blushing?”

“I’m angry!”

“Could've fooled me.”

He stepped forward, not retreating, good.

Their eyes met and for a moment neither moved, there was genuine hostility there. But also something Ravina couldn't quite name yet. Something hot beneath it, like a challenge answering a challenge.

His voice lowered. “You’re going to regret laughing at me.”

Ravina’s eyebrows lifted, that was better. “There you are.”

“What?”

“For a moment I thought I'd scared you.”

His eyes burned. “You couldn't.”

Ravina smiled sweetly. “Then next time…” She let the sentence hang. “…try and stop me doing what I want.”

That finally broke him. “Who the hell do you think you are?” He snapped as he moved past her sharply.

Ravina turned, and something slipped from his jacket pocket. A plastic card landed in the grass causing both of them to look down. Then at each other.

His eyes widened. “Don't.”

But Ravina moved first as she snatched it up.

“Give me that.”

“One second.”

“I said give it back!”

Ravina stepped away, holding the card out of reach as she read. Trainer identification, Photograph, Registration details. And… “Silver?”

He froze, letting Ravina a little more time to look over the card, then at him.

“…Your name is Silver?”

“Give it back.”

“That is spectacularly dramatic.”

“Give.” He stepped closer. “It.” Closer. “Back.”

Ravina held the card against her chest. “Ask nicely.”

Silver looked as though the concept had personally offended him. “No.”

“Then I suppose it's mine.”

“You can't steal someone's Trainer Card!”

Ravina raised an eyebrow, there was a beat as Silver realized what he had just said and Ravina’s grin grew wider still. “Oh.”

“Don't.”

You can't steal someone's property, Silver?”

“Shut up.”

“Interesting philosophy.”

“Give it back!”

Ravina laughed and finally held it toward him, letting Silver grab for it.

She didn't pull away, but she also didn't release immediately. His fingers closed over the edge of the card. Ravina’s remained on the other side. Their hands almost touched.

She looked up as Silver met her eyes.

“Next time you decide I'm weak…” She released the card. “…beat me first.”

Silver snatched it away. “There won't be a next time.”

Ravina turned back toward Cinder. “That's disappointing.”

“What?”

She glanced over her shoulder, a mischievous little smile returned. “I was starting to enjoy myself.”

His face flushed again as Ravina picked Cinder up. “Bye, Silver.”

“I hate you.” he stated as she began walking toward New Bark.

“That was fast. We only just learned each other's names.”

“Get lost!”

Ravina raised one hand. “See you next time~”

“There won't be a next time!”

She laughed all the way around the next bend.

Cinder stared at her, Ravina noticed after perhaps thirty seconds and sighed

“What?”

Cinder continued staring as she adjusted him against her hip.

“He deserved it.”

A small chirp.

“He did.”

Another as Ravina narrowed her eyes.

“Are you judging me?”

Cinder slowly looked away.

“Oh, don't start.”

His tiny shoulders moved and Ravina could only stare.

“…Are you laughing at me?”

Cinder suddenly became very interested in the road.

“Traitor.”

She scratched beneath his chin anyway.

The humor faded as quickly as it had come, because Silver had Totodile, Silver had been outside Elm's laboratory that morning, Silver had all but admitted he believed taking the Pokémon was justified, Ravina looked back and saw the road behind them was empty.

“…We need to tell Professor Elm.” Cinder's expression grew serious. “We need to tell him everything.”

Ravina’s hand settled protectively over the satchel containing the Egg. Then she continued toward New Bark.

Far behind them, Silver stood alone beside the road. His Trainer Card remained clutched in one hand and his face was still warm.

He hated that, he hated her smug little smile, he hated the way she had looked at him, he hated that Cyndaquil and he especially hated losing.

Totodile's Poké Ball shifted faintly against his belt causing Silver to look down.

“Don't.”

The Poké Ball moved again.

“She got lucky.”

A small wobble and Silver's eyebrow twitched.

“It was one battle.”

The ball remained still for precisely three seconds, then it wobbled again. At that, Silver shoved it into his pocket.

“Shut up.”

By the time Ravina reached New Bark, the sun had begun sinking toward the horizon. The little coastal town no longer looked peaceful, a police vehicle stood outside Professor Elm's laboratory.

Two officers were speaking beside the gate as several locals had gathered farther down the road, whispering among themselves.

The laboratory door stood open as she approached and Ravina slowed. Cinder stiffened in her arms. They could see Mrs. Elm was visible inside, Professor Elm paced behind her and standing near the entrance, arms folded, expression unreadable, was Nostus.

Her eyes immediately found Ravina as she stopped at the gate. For a moment, neither mother nor daughter spoke, then Nostus's shoulders loosened.

Only slightly, but enough. It was then Ravina understood just how worried she'd been.

“Mum.” she started as Nostus crossed the distance quickly, her hands settled first on Ravina's shoulders, checking her over with one sweep of her eyes.

“You're alright?”

“I'm fine.”

“Cinder?”

A chirp.

“The Egg?”

Ravina patted the satchel. “Safe.”

Nostus exhaled. “Good.” Then her expression sharpened. “What happened?”

Ravina looked toward Professor Elm, toward the police.then back toward her mother.

“I know who stole Totodile.” Everyone within earshot went silent and Professor Elm stopped pacing.

One of the police officers turned, Nostus's eyebrows rose and Ravina tightened her hold around Cinder.

“His name is Silver.”

And somewhere inside Professor Elm's laboratory, on a tray that should have held two remaining Poké Balls, only empty spaces waited.

Chapter 5

A World Beyond New Bark

The front garden was immaculate rows of herbs bordered by a neat stone path leading to a cozy wooden cottage. A vegetable patch occupied one side of the yard, while bird feeders hung from nearby trees, attracting a constant stream of Pidgey and Hoothoot.

Ravina paused before the front door. "...Ready?"

Cinder looked up at her and confidently chirped.

She smiled. "Good answer."

Three firm knocks echoed through the cottage and almost immediately, footsteps approached and the door swung open.

A cheerful, silver-haired gentleman greeted them with a welcoming smile. "You must be Elm's courier!"

"I am."

He laughed warmly. "And punctual, too! I was beginning to wonder whether the roads had distracted you."

Ravina couldn't help smiling. "They nearly did. I've met some very interesting people."

"Johto has already begun treating you properly." He chuckled as he stepped aside. "Please, come in."

The cottage's interior was unlike anything Ravina had expected, Bookshelves covered almost every wall. Glass display cabinets housed fossils, old Poké Balls, carved stone tablets and curious artifacts from every region imaginable, one cabinet held nothing but unusually shaped feathers and another displayed antique Poké Ball mechanisms.

Another voice drifted in from the adjoining study. "Oh? Do you have another guest?." An older man stepped into the room, adjusting his glasses. his expression was calm and kindly, but there was an unmistakable energy about him.

He looked first at Cinder then at Ravina and his eyebrows rose. "...Well, You must be Elm's newest assistant."

Ravina blinked, recognizing the older gentleman from tv and magazines. "...Professor Oak?"

"The one and only." He smiled, extending a hand. "It's a pleasure to meet you."

Over tea, the conversation flowed surprisingly naturally.  Ravina expected the older professor to immediately begin lecturing, but Professor Oak didn't speak down to Ravina. He was more interested in asking her questions about Cinder

"How was Cyndaquil settling in?"

"Very well so far, it's been a little over a day so far.” Ravina replied after a sip of tea.

"Has he shown any unusual habits?"

Ravina looked down. "He likes checking that I'm still following him?"

Oak chuckled. "Excellent, That usually means he's accepted you as part of his social group."

Cinder looked enormously pleased with himself as the center of attention.

Eventually Ravina remembered why she'd come. "Oh!" She started as she reached into her satchel. "Professor Elm asked me to deliver this."

Mr. Pokémon accepted the parcel with obvious excitement. "Wonderful!, I've been waiting for these reference documents."

He carefully opened the package before disappearing into another room. After some rattling and rustling, he returned a few moments carrying something much smaller.

Resting gently between both hands, he held an egg. Cream-colored and decorated with bright red and blue triangular markings.

Ravina stared. "...It's beautiful."

Mr. Pokémon nodded. "I've spent months studying it, Nobody knows what species it belongs to. It hasn't hatched, it hasn't shown any signs of deterioration. And yet…” He smiled. "...it's unquestionably alive."

He carefully offered it to Ravina. "I'd like Professor Elm to continue the research. He has the facilities to get to the bottom of this.”

Ravina accepted the egg with both hands. It felt warm, almost comforting to the touch.

"I'll make sure it reaches him safely."

Professor Oak watched quietly throughout the exchange. Then he reached into his briefcase.

"I wonder..." He pondered as he produced a compact red electronic device.

It was like a slim flip phone, turned off as it’s screen remained blank.

Ravina looked curiously at it. "...What's that?"

"A Pokédex."

She had heard the word before, Professor Elm had mentioned Oak's lifelong research.

"This one hasn't been assigned yet." Oak held it thoughtfully.

"Since you are helping with Elms errands while you're in Johto, then perhaps..." He offered the device. "...you'd consider helping me as well."

Ravina accepted it almost automatically. "I don't understand."

Oak smiled. "The Pokédex doesn't simply identify Pokémon, It records their behavior, habitats, growth, distribution."

"Since every trainer sees something different. Then the more observations we gather, the better we understand the world we share with Pokémon."

He looked directly at Ravina. "I'm not asking you to complete it, I'm asking you to contribute. Record the Pokémon you encounter, observe them, learn from them, every entry helps."

Ravina looked down at the blank screen, then at Cinder and then back to Oak. "...I'd like that."

Oak nodded approvingly. "Excellent, then consider yourself my newest field assistant."

Ravina laughed softly. "I've only been Professor Elm's assistant for two days, and already I've got another job."

Oak smiled. "The best researchers are usually very busy."

The conversation drifted naturally toward stories of travel. Professor Oak recounted amusing tales from Kanto. Mr. Pokémon shared odd discoveries he'd made over the years.

And Ravina listened with growing fascination, while refraining from telling of her own misadventures from abroad. The world suddenly seemed much larger with these stories.

Professor Elm's laboratory wasn't an isolated little building in New Bark. It was part of an enormous network of researchers, collectors and trainers all sharing discoveries with one another. She hadn't realized she'd just become part of it.

Eventually Oak checked his watch. "...Oh dear, I've been enjoying myself far too much."

Mr. Pokémon laughed. "You've somewhere to be?"

"I do." Oak sighed dramatically. "My producer already thinks I talk too much. If I'm late again, he'll threaten to replace me with recorded episodes."

Ravina tilted her head. "...Producer?"

Professor Oak smiled. "I host a weekly radio program from Goldenrod. Professor Oak's Pokémon Talk. We discuss recent discoveries, answer questions from trainers and occasionally settle particularly spirited arguments."

Mr. Pokémon grinned. "You mean you spend an hour telling everyone why you're right."

Oak chuckled. "Sometimes." He gathered his briefcase and continued. "It was lovely meeting you, Ravina. I hope we'll cross paths again, be sure to document many pokemon~"

"I'll be sure to sir!” Ravina replied with a grin.

Together they stepped outside. Oak's driver waited beside a comfortable League vehicle parked beneath the trees. Before climbing in, the Professor looked back once more.

"You've made an excellent choice."

Ravina blinked. "My choice?"

He nodded toward Cinder. "No, Cyndaquil made an excellent choice." He smiled knowingly. "Don't disappoint him."

The car rolled slowly down the woodland road toward Goldenrod and silence settled over the cottage once more.

Mr. Pokémon waved from his doorway.

"Safe travels. I'll let Professor Elm know the Egg is on its way."

"I'll be there before sunset."

"I've no doubt." he called as he made his way back into his house.

Ravina and Cinder had barely reached the end of the garden path when her Pokégear suddenly vibrated. The cheerful electronic chime echoed through the quiet forest.

She smiled. "Probably Mum checking whether I've eaten." commented before she answered. "Hello?"

Professor Elm's voice exploded through the speaker. "Ravina!?"

She stopped walking. "Professor?"

"Where are you!?"

"...I just left Mr. Pokémon's house."

A long breath of relief came from the other end. Then fear. Genuine fear.

"Listen to me carefully, Come back immediately."

Ravina's smile vanished.

"What happened?"

There was a pause on the line, then. "...Someone broke into the laboratory."

The forest suddenly felt much quieter as Ravina instinctively pulled the Mystery Egg a little closer. Cinder's ears snapped upright, his relaxed posture disappeared instantly.

Professor Elm spoke again, his voice shaking. "Please, Hurry."

Then the call ended.

For several seconds, neither trainer nor Pokémon moved. Then Ravina looked down at Cinder. "...We're going home."

Without another word, the two of them broke into a run, the peaceful journey north forgotten as the quiet roads of Johto suddenly carried a sense of urgency they hadn't known before.

Ravina’s Pokémon Adventure (HGSS) Chapter 4.2

Poke Ravina route 30 2

The morning passed pleasantly after Joey continued south. The excitement of the battle gradually settled into comfortable conversation. Well, conversation might have been giving Ravina too much credit.

Mostly, She talked and Cinder listened. Occasionally he would offer an approving chirp whenever she happened to guess what he was thinking.

"...Do you think I looked nervous?" Cinder looked at her in a way she took to mean an affirmative. "I'll take that as a yes." He chirped again. She laughed. "Thanks, Very supportive."

The path continued winding north through gentle woodland. Sunlight filtered between broad green leaves. Several trainers passed heading in the opposite direction, each offering friendly greetings as they walked.

One young Bug Catcher excitedly showed Ravina a Caterpie he'd caught that morning. An elderly woman warned them to watch for uneven ground after last night's rain. Another traveler simply smiled at Cinder.

"He’s an adorable little fellow?" Ravina Smiled.

Around midday, another cottage came into view. Unlike the last few farmhouses they'd passed, this one was impossible to mistake. Every tree surrounding the property bore brightly coloured fruit.

Red, Blue, Green, Pink, Black, Yellow and White.

The colours almost looked painted against the deep green leaves and Cinder immediately became fascinated. He wandered toward the nearest tree. One bright red Apricorn had already fallen into the grass which he cautiously sniffed at before looking back at Ravina.

"...Go on."

He nudged it experimentally but nothing happened. Apparently satisfied, he rolled it gently across the ground with his nose.

A warm laugh drifted from the porch. "Looks like he approves."

Ravina looked up to see an elderly man who was watching with obvious amusement.

"Good afternoon." he continued with a smile

"Afternoon." She glanced toward the trees. "...I've never seen fruit like these before."

"Most visitors haven't." He stepped down from the porch, brushing soil from his hands. "Let me guess, you're looking for Mr. Pokémon?"

Ravina smiled. "I am."

The old man's shoulders drooped theatrically. "They all are, I've become the landmark."

He sighed dramatically. "'Turn left at the Apricorn fellow, 'If you've reached the Apricorn trees you've almost gone too far, 'Mr. Pokémon's just past the Apricorn bloke.'"

Ravina laughed, thinking fast as she replied. "...Actually, I was hoping to meet the Apricorn fellow."

He blinked. "...You were?"

"Professor Elm mentioned someone nearby who still works with Apricorns."

The old man straightened immediately."Well! That's different, come in!"

The cottage smelled faintly of polished wood and drying herbs. Shelves lined every wall. But instead of books, there were hundreds of Apricorns.

Each carefully sorted by colour, Half-finished wooden Poké Balls rested beside delicate carving tools.

Ravina slowly turned in place. "...You make Poké Balls?"

The old man nodded proudly. "The old way." He started as he picked up a smooth blue Apricorn. "Long before modern factories..." He gently turned it over in his hands. "...every Poké Ball began like this."

He smiled. "Takes patience, modern ones are faster, "But..." He shrugged. "...some traditions are worth keeping."

For the next twenty minutes, Ravina forgot she was supposed to be running an errand. The old craftsman happily explained every variety of Apricorn. Which Pokémon seemed drawn to each colour. How careful drying changed the shell. Why handcrafted Balls still mattered despite modern manufacturing.

Cinder sat beside him the entire time, Listening and occasionally sniffing whatever Apricorn the old man happened to be holding.

"You've got yourself a polite little partner."

Ravina smiled. "He tries."

The old man laughed. "Nah." He gently scratched beneath Cinder's chin. "He is a good boy~."

Eventually, the craftsman disappeared into a back room and returned carrying a weathered leather satchel. Small loops had been sewn into the inside, perfectly sized for Apricorns.

"My grandson used to carry this, but he became a Ranger. Doesn't collect Apricorns anymore.” He said as he offered it to Ravina. "You'll be travelling, You'll find these trees all across Johto. It'd be a shame to leave good Apricorns lying on the ground."

Ravina hesitated. "I couldn't just—"

"You can, I've got another."

She accepted it carefully. "...Thank you."

"Think nothing of it." He smiled warmly. "Just promise me one thing."

"What?"

"If you ever reach Azalea Town..." He pointed farther south with one weathered finger.

"...visit Kurt, my old teacher, if anyone can show you what an Apricorn can become, it's him."

"I will." Ravina nodded gratefully.

As Ravina stepped back onto the road, she paused. "...One more question."

"Hm?"

"How much farther?"

The old man chuckled. "Not far." Then he pointed up the gently rising path. "See that hill?"

Ravina nodded.

"Mr. Pokémon's cottage is on the other side."

"...Really?"

"You've almost made it."

The walk felt shorter after that, excitement had a way of doing that. The trees gradually thinned. The road climbed steadily toward higher ground. Then the forest opened.

A neat little cottage overlooked the surrounding countryside, smoke curled lazily from its chimney, flower boxes rested beneath every window.

Outside, someone had carefully tended a small vegetable garden.

The place felt peaceful.

Cinder stopped beside Ravina and she smiled. "...I think we've found it."

The little Fire-mouse looked toward the cottage, then back at Ravina as if silently asking:

"Ready?"

Ravina took a slow breath. Adjusted the satchel containing Professor Elm's parcel. And walked toward the front door.

Unaware that waiting inside were two people whose conversation would quietly change the course of her journey forever.

Northbound

The smell of fresh bread drifted in through the open inn window as Ravina stretched beneath the blankets, blinking blearily as morning sunlight spilled across the room.

"...Morning already?" she asked as a familiar weight rested against her side.

Cinder, the little Fire-mouse was still asleep, curled into a warm ball against her hip, tiny paws twitching occasionally as he dreamed which made her smile.

"I guess someone wore himself out yesterday." One crimson eye slowly opened as Cinder yawned dramatically before climbing onto her stomach with absolutely no regard for personal space.

"Oof, Good morning to you too." Ravina commented while He chirped happily.

After breakfast, Ravina stepped back into the streets of Cherrygrove. The town had transformed overnight, merchants were opening their shops, fishing boats were returning to the harbor and Cyclists weaved between pedestrians.

Somewhere nearby, a Wingull stole a pastry from an unsuspecting customer and was immediately chased down the street by an irate baker.

Cinder watched the entire spectacle with fascination.

"Welcome to city life." Ravina commented as she soldered her satchel “but we have more road to walk today”

Route 30 left the bustle behind surprisingly quickly. Stone roads became dirt paths, houses grew sparse, The sound of waves gave way to rustling leaves and birdsong.
Morning dew still clung to the tall grass bordering the trail as a wooden sign read simply:

ROUTE 30
North to Mr. Pokémon's House

"...Almost there." Ravina commented as Cinder nodded enthusiastically in agreement.

Not ten minutes later.

"Hey!" A voice called from ahead. Alerting Ravina to a teenager who waved enthusiastically from beside the path. He couldn't have been much older than Ravina with a baseball cap sat crooked on his head, and a Rattata perched proudly on one shoulder. "First time on Route 30?"

"It is."

"I'm Joey!" He proudly pointed to his partner. "And this is Rattata!"

The little purple Pokémon puffed out its chest.

Ravina smiled. "I'm Ravina."

"Cynda!"

"And this is Cinder."

Joey crouched. "Oh wow, a Cyndaquil, you don't see many of those around here."

"He was Professor Elm's."

"...Seriously?"

"On loan."

Joey whistled. "Guess that means you're starting the Gym Challenge?"

"...Eventually, maybe, today's just an errand."

“Haha, maybe in the future then~” He laughed as he scratched the back of his neck. "...So..."

Ravina tilted her head. "So?"

"You wanna battle?" There it was, her first challenge, just another trainer asking a perfectly ordinary question.

She looked down at Cinder. "What do you think?"

Cinder stepped forward before she'd even finished speaking, the tiny flames on his back flared to life.

Joey grinned. "I'll take that as a yes."

The battle took place on a small clearing beside the road, with just the two trainers standing opposite one another.

Joey pointed dramatically. "Rattata!"

The Normal-type rodent leapt into the grass in response. "Ready!"

Ravina took a slow breath. Everything Professor Elm had explained yesterday suddenly seemed much more real.

She swallowed. "...Cinder." The little Fire-mouse glanced back. "You've got this."

He gave a confident chirp. Somehow that calmed her nerves more than his.

"Begin!" Joey called out as Rattata exploded forward.

"Quick Attack!" The purple blur crossed the field in an instant.

"Cinder!" he barely managed to brace himself before the impact knocked him backwards. Cinder  rolled once, Twice then sprang back onto his feet.

Joey blinked. "...Nice recovery."

Ravina exhaled. "right, to stay calm..." She thought quickly.

"Cinder!, don't chase him."

Joey smiled. "Good luck with that." Rattata was already circling, Fast, Far faster than Cinder.

"If we can't outrun him..." She started as she thought fast "Then make him come to us."

Cinder looked back, understanding flickered in his eyes as he planted his feet and waited.

Rattata darted closer then away again. Testing responses and looking for another opening.

Joey frowned. "...What's she doing?" Rattata lunged for an attack.

"Now!" Ravina called, the instant Rattata committed. "Smokescreen!"

Black smoke erupted across the clearing and Rattata disappeared into the cloud.

Joey's eyes widened. "What?"

From inside the smoke came a surprised squeak as Rattata stumbled out, blinking furiously.

"There!, tackle!"

Cinder erupted from the smoke and spear tackled Rattata cleanly in the side. Rattata yelped as the attack connected and was knocked to the side. The smoke drifted away as Joey recalled his partner with a smile.

"...Nice."

Ravina blinked. "...That's it?"

He laughed. "Yeah, Rattata's done, You won."

For a moment, she simply stood there. "...I..." She looked toward Cinder. "We won!."

Cinder bounded across the clearing. Instead of celebrating himself he jumped into her arms.

She laughed as she caught him. "You were amazing." He made a pleased little trill, nuzzling into her shoulder, the warmth from the flames on his back seeped gently through her shirt that she found comforting.

Joey walked over, returning Rattata to his shoulder. "You've got good instincts."

"I was mostly guessing."

"So was I when I started." He reached into his pocket. "My number?"

Ravina looked surprised. "...Your phone number?"

"My Rattata's gonna become the strongest one around. When he does..." He grinned confidently. "I'm calling everybody."

She laughed. "...Deal."

They exchanged Pokégear numbers and Joey waved goodbye and continued south toward Cherrygrove, Ravina looked down at Cinder.

"...First battle." He nodded proudly. "...First win." Another nod as She smiled.

"...I definitely think I picked the right partner." Cinder froze, then looked up at her. For a heartbeat, neither of them moved. It wasn't because she'd praised his strength, It was because she'd quietly acknowledged something neither had said aloud since leaving New Bark.

He wasn't just Professor Elm's Cyndaquil anymore, He was her partner. The little Fire-type leaned forward and gently bumped his forehead against hers as Ravina closed her eyes and returned the gesture.

"Come on, partner." She stood, adjusting her satchel. "Mr. Pokémon is waiting."

Joey watched Ravina disappear down the road. Waiting a few more moments before he looked at his Pokégear then looked at Rattata. And held a long pause.

"...I got her number."

Rattata squeaked excitedly.

"I KNOW!"

Chapter 3

The Road to Cherrygrove

Travel Journal — Day 2

Professor Elm said the walk to Cherrygrove should only take a few hours.
Cinder has already stopped three times to investigate bugs.
We've travelled approximately twelve minutes.

The road west from New Bark was quiet and peaceful.

Stone walls separated fields of tall grass from narrow walking paths, while rows of trees swayed gently beneath the spring breeze. Somewhere in the distance, a flock of Pidgey scattered into the air before settling again only a little farther away as Ravina adjusted the strap of her satchel.

"So..." She looked down. "It's just us now."

Cinder trotted happily beside her, he had insisted on walking after only a few minutes in her arms and every now and then he'd wander a little ahead, nose twitching as he explored some fascinating smell only Pokémon seemed able to detect.

Whenever he got too far… he'd stop, look behind himself, confirm Ravina was still there, only then would he continue.

Ravina smiled. "Making sure I haven't wandered off?"

Cinder chirped back.

"I'll take that as a yes."

Travelling turned out to be very different from what Ravina had imagined. The road wasn’t dangerous, but it demanded attention. Roots crossed the path, bird pokémon nested overhead, signs warned travelers not to disturb certain patches of woodland during breeding season.

Several times they stepped aside for Rangers mounted on large Pokémon, who were patrolling the route with practiced ease.

Each offered a friendly wave and one noticed Cinder.

"First partner?" One Ranger smiled as she passed, to which Ravina nodded back.

"It shows."

"...Does it?"

"He hasn't taken his eyes off you."

Ravina looked down and sure enough, Cinder was watching the conversation rather than the scenery.

The Ranger laughed. "Don't worry, that's a good sign."

Not long afterward the road gave way to stretches of taller grass. The wind rippled across it like waves.

Cinder slowed and cocked his head towards the grass. Ravina noticed immediately. "You hear something?"

A soft rustle answered, then another. Several small shapes darted through the grass before vanishing again. Wild Pokémon were watching from the camouflage, curious at what was stepping through their territory.

Ravina found herself lowering her voice without realizing. "They're following us." Cinder nodded once. His flames remained unlit telling her that he wasn't alarmed, but she could tell he was alert.

For several minutes the unseen audience remained. Occasionally a flash of brown fur appeared, sometimes a tiny pair of eyes reflected sunlight from within the grass. Whenever the Pokémon drifted too close Cinder would simply glance in their direction and they'd retreat again.

Ravina found the whole thing oddly reassuring. "...Professor Elm was right." Cinder looked up.

"I would've walked straight past all of that."

He puffed his chest out proudly.

"You've got much better ears than I do."

Around midday they reached a shallow stream crossing, a smooth wooden bridge arched over the water.

Ravina stretched. "My feet are already complaining." groaned as she gazed over the stream. Cinder immediately wandered toward the water's edge and sniffed cautiously. Then jumped backward when a Magikarp suddenly splashed near the surface.

Ravina burst into laughter. "Oh, brave guardian."

Cinder looked deeply offended and made a tiny grumbling noise.

"Dont worry, it startled me too." She reassured as she got and and knelt beside the stream. "Let's eat."

Lunch consisted of simple sandwiches prepared by Nostus that morning, Ravina offered Cinder a portion. He sniffed it before he accepted it, then quietly carried his piece several feet away before eating.

Ravina watched with curiosity. "...You're making sure nobody steals it?" Cinder nodded with complete seriousness. "...Fair enough."

After lunch they rested beneath the shade of a broad oak.The afternoon had grown pleasantly warm. Cinder wandered back over and settled beside Ravina with a contented sigh.

She leaned against the trunk and without thinking her hand drifted toward him, Slow strokes along the smooth fur heat the back of his neck.

He closed his eyes, the tiny flames on his back flickered lazily.

"...Comfortable?" A happy little chirrup answered.

Ravina smiled to herself. Yesterday, he'd been Professor Elm's Pokémon.

Today he'd already started feeling like hers, because he'd chosen to trust her. and that thought sat warmly in her chest.

The first glimpse of Cherrygrove came from the crest of a gentle hill. Red rooftops, A harbor glimmering beneath the afternoon sun, The distant cries of Wingull drifting inland from the sea, Smoke curled lazily from chimneys.

The town was far larger than New Bark, bustling and alive.

Ravina stopped walking. "...Wow."

Cinder climbed onto a nearby stone and stared as well.

"It really is a city."

Ravina crouched beside Cinder. "What do you think?"

He looked toward the harbor, then back at Ravina and gave an excited little squeak.

"I agree." She laughed. "I think we're going to like it here."

Together, Trainer and Pokémon began walking down the hill. Unaware that before the next day was over they would meet a collector of strange Pokémon, Encounter one of the world's most famous Professors and Receive an unexpected second research assignment.

And start a chain of events that would change far more than either of them could possibly imagine.

For now, however, Cherrygrove City waited and it was getting late, they needed a place to stay.

Ravina’s Pokémon Adventure (HGSS) Chapter 2.5

Elm took a few moments to explain the route before she left. She had to go from New Bark to Cherrygrove first then north, Mr. Pokémon lived farther along the road, outside the city proper.

"If you keep a reasonable pace," Professor Elm said, "you should reach him well before evening."

"And if I don't?"

"Stay in Cherrygrove." Mrs. Elm added that part immediately. "There are inns near the Pokémon Center."

Professor Elm nodded. "Yes. Don't try travelling unfamiliar roads after dark."

Ravina glanced toward Cinder. He had decided the floor was no longer interesting and was now sitting beside her foot. "You really think it's that dangerous?"

"Not usually." Professor Elm chose his words carefully. "But a partner Pokémon isn't only for battling other trainers." He added as he glanced down at Cinder. "They watch things you don't."

Cinder perked up like he was being addressed. "They hear things first."

Ravina followed his gaze. "And if something decides I'm lunch?"

Professor Elm smiled faintly. "Then hopefully Cinder convinces it otherwise." The little Cyndaquil puffed himself up.

Ravina laughed. "Look at you." Cinder looked very pleased with himself.

Professor Elm handed Ravina a small parcel. "This is for Mr. Pokémon."

She turned it over. "What's inside?"

"Research notes." Elm paused. "Mostly."

Nostus looked sharply at him. "Mostly?"

"Nothing dangerous."

"Professor."

"Nothing dangerous."

Nostus continued staring.

Professor Elm sighed. "I'll give you the inventory sheet."

"Thank you."

Ravina watched the exchange with concern. "Do I want to know?"

"No." Both of them answered at once.

There were no Poké Balls in her bag, nor trainer kit, stack of potions or a badge case. Ravina wasn't beginning a Gym Challenge. Not yet.

For now she carried water, food, the parcel, a few emergency supplies, her Pokégear… and one Cyndaquil.

That was enough.

At the laboratory door, Nostus stopped her. "Ravina."

She looked back as her mother's teasing expression had softened. "Check in when you reach Cherrygrove."

"I will."

"And don't rush."

"I know."

"If Cinder gets tired, stop."

Ravina glanced down, Cinder was already pawing impatiently at the ground. "He seems fine."

"For now." Nostus smiled. "Several hours is different from several minutes."

Ravina nodded. "I'll look after him."

Nostus's gaze shifted toward Cinder. "And you." The little Pokémon looked up at her. "Look after my daughter."

Cinder stared for a moment, then gave one determined little chirp.

Ravina's eyebrows rose. "Traitor."

Nostus laughed. "Good boy."

Outside, the road stretched west, beyond New Bark's last houses, the landscape opened into green fields and distant woodland.

Ravina adjusted her bag as Cinder stood beside her and for a moment neither moved.

This was ridiculous, She wasn't embarking on some grand adventure. She was delivering a parcel, that was it.

Still… Something about standing there made it feel larger than that, Ravina thought as she looked down. "You ready?"

Cinder looked up for a moment, then marched forward.

Ravina laughed. "Apparently." then started walking.

From the laboratory window, Nostus watched them disappear toward the edge of town as Mrs. Elm joined her. "You don't seem worried."

Nostus folded her arms. "Oh, I'm worried."

"Then why send her?"

"Because she's eighteen."

Nostus watched Ravina pause as Cinder became distracted by something near the roadside. Ravina waited for him instead of calling him back and eventually he hurried after her.

Nostus smiled. "And because if I'm standing beside her every time something happens… she won't find out what she can do without me."

Mrs. Elm nodded. "That's difficult."

"Extremely."

There was another pause before Mrs. Elm glanced sideways at her. "You know, for someone who's spent the morning threatening my husband's filing cabinets..."

Nostus looked over.

"...you're surprisingly sentimental."

"Don't tell anyone."

Mrs. Elm laughed.

Farther down the road, Ravina hadn't gone ten minutes before Cinder discovered tall grass, Specifically… that things lived inside it.

Something rustled causing Cinder to freeze.

Ravina stopped. "What?"

Another rustle and a Rattata burst from the grass. Ravina jumped in surprise and the wild Pokémon jumped too. For one confused second, both sides simply stared at each other. Then Cinder moved, He stepped directly between Ravina and the Rattata, Flames erupted along his back.

They were not enormous. But the sudden and bright flare caused the Rattata to recoil. Its ears flattened as Cinder gave a sharp little warning cry.
The wild Pokémon took one look at him...and fled back into the grass and silence returned.

Cinder remained planted in front of Ravina, flames crackling. Ravina stared for a moment before she slowly crouched behind him. "Cinder?"

He glanced back, The flames immediately shrank.

"...Were you protecting me?"

He perked up a bit and Ravina smiled as the last flames disappeared. She reached down and scratched behind one of his ear nubs. "Good boy."

Cinder leaned into her hand as Something warm settled in Ravina's chest.

Not the fire. Something else, They had known each other less than an hour and already he'd stepped between her and something he thought might hurt her.

Ravina scooped him up and Cinder immediately settled against her. "Alright." She started as she resumed walking. "You can ride for a bit.”

Cinder made absolutely no objection.

Back in New Bark… A red-haired boy watched the laboratory from across the road.

The girl was gone, The professor's assistant was busy and Professor Elm had disappeared deeper into the building.

The boy's eyes settled on the window. Behind it… Two Poké Balls remained.

He stared at one in particular, the one containing Totodile, then he stepped away from the road and vanished around the side of the laboratory.

Ravina never saw him.

She was already well beyond New Bark Town... Walking toward Cherrygrove with Cinder asleep against her chest... Completely unaware that by the time she returned, everything at Professor Elm's laboratory would have changed.

The first Pokémon appeared in a soft burst of light to reveal a Chikorita. She landed neatly on the floor, blinked once, then looked up at Ravina in a Calm and Curious manner as the leaf atop her head swayed gently.

"Oh." Ravina crouched. "Hello."

Chikorita stepped closer and sniffed at her fingers for a moment, before deciding Ravina was acceptable, she gave a cheerful little chirp.

VN Lab Scene 2 1

Professor Elm nodded proudly. "She loves attention."

The second Poké Ball opened and a blue shape erupted from it.

"Totodile!" an animalistic cry called out as Ravina barely had enough time to register teeth before the little Pokémon bounded across the room. He circled Professor Elm and jumped against a chair, nearly knocking it over.

Mrs. Elm caught it with one hand as Totodile skidded to a halt in front of Ravina and stared up at her. A huge grin stretched across his snout.

VN Lab Scene 2 2

"Very probably."Professor Elm laughed as Totodile snapped his jaws happily.

Then came the third ball.

Professor Elm hesitated for just a moment. "This one might take a little patience." he added as the Poké Ball opened.

A small Cyndaquil appeared, who immediately seemed to regret being visible as he lowered himself close to the floor and his eyes narrowed into cautious little slits.

No flames nor chirping, Just a watchfulness as Ravina and the pokemon looked at each other.

Professor Elm rubbed the back of his neck. "He's always been a little shy."

"With everyone?"

"Most people."

Ravina crouched, causing Cyndaquil to tense.

She stopped, she didn't reach toward him or call him over. She simply rested one hand on her knee.

"That's alright."

His nose twitched as Ravina waited. Behind her, the adults went quiet until eventually… One small paw moved forward, then another as Cyndaquil approached slowly. Every few steps he stopped and watched the human in front of him, considered for a moment, then continued.

Ravina didn't move until he reached her, He leaned forward, sniffed her fingers and decided to stay there. Which made Ravina smile.

VN Lab Scene 2 3

There was one small turn of his head in response. So she very slowly turned her hand palm-up to let Cyndaquil sniff again. And then placed one tiny paw against her fingers.

Something about the gesture hit Ravina harder than she'd expected. It wasn't dramatic, He hadn't leapt into her arms, He hadn't instantly decided she was his favorite person in the world.
He'd just decided she was safe enough to touch.

Ravina gently brushed one finger along the side of his paw.

"You're nervous, aren't you?" she asked as his nose bumped against her hand. She laughed softly. "Yeah, I think I like you."

Cyndaquil lifted his head, and for the first time, a tiny line of flame flickered along his back.

Professor Elm raised his eyebrows in surprise, Mrs. Elm smiled and Nostus said nothing as she observed.

Ravina scratched gently beneath Cyndaquil's chin, His eyes closed like he was enjoying the attention, the flames stayed, warm and steady, they didn't seem agitated in a  defensive manner.

"I think that's your answer." Professor Elm's spoke up in a softened tone.

Ravina glanced up. "My answer?"

"Which Pokémon you should take?"

She looked back toward Cyndaquil, the little Fire-type had leaned farther into her hand. "...I haven't met them properly."

"You don't always need long." Mrs. Elm smiled. "Sometimes they decide."

Ravina considered that for a moment then carefully slid both hands beneath Cyndaquil. She waited a moment for resistance. But none came, he allowed himself to be lifted to her body, Once against her chest, he curled instinctively toward the warmth of her body.

Ravina blinked for a moment, then smiled.

"Well." She started as she looked down at him. "I suppose you're coming with me."

Cyndaquil made a tiny sound in agreement, and Ravina laughed.

"You're going to need a name."

His eyes opened as she studied him, the little flames had died away again but she could still feel the warmth through her clothes.

"...Cinder." The Cyndaquil stared at her as she repeated. "Cinder?"

He gave another curious head turn, then he pressed his nose under her chin.

Mrs. Elm laughed. "I think that's approval."

"Cinder it is." Ravina grinned

Nostus finally stepped closer. She looked down at the Pokémon in Ravina's arms. Cinder looked  up at the new shadow, and up. and farther up, then the tiny Fire-type stiffened.

Nostus noticed immediately and crouched but was still taller than most people would have been standing.

"Hello, Cinder."

He stared at her as Nostus offered one finger. Cinder sniffed it, then glanced back toward Ravina as if checking. Ravina smiled.

"She's alright." she confirmed with a nod.

After a moment, Cinder touched his nose to Nostus's fingertip and Nostus grinned. "Good."

Then, turned her attention to Ravina, "Try not to lose him."

"Mum."

"I mean it."

"I'm not going to lose my Pokémon."

"Excellent." She clapped as she stood. "That's one item off my list."

Ravina groaned.

Inside the laboratory, Professor Elm was excitedly pacing. "Ravina!" He called as he hurried over the moment she stepped inside. "Perfect timing!"

Mrs. Elm appeared from a side room carrying a tray. "Good morning dear."

"Morning." ravina replied, looking a little wary at the professor's manic disposition.

"Tea?"

"Please." the smaller girl nodded

Mrs. Elm smiled as she glanced at her husband, "Professor Elm has had three cups already."

"I needed them." he protested

"You forgot the first two existed."

"...That too."

From somewhere deeper in the building came a filing cabinet opening before Ravina heard Nostus's voice. "Professor?"

Professor Elm froze. "...Yes?"

"Why is there a grant application from three years ago inside a textbook?" He looked thoughtful. "...Which textbook?"

Nostus appeared in the doorway holding both items. "That isn't the part I'm concerned about."

Mrs. Elm smiled as Ravina accepted her tea and added. "I've decided this is going to be my entertainment while we're here."

Nostus pointed at her with the folder. "Go have your adventure."

"I'm going." Ravina retorted

"Good."

Professor Elm cleared his throat. "Actually, about that." He motioned for Ravina to follow him. "You shouldn't travel the route alone."

Ravina frowned. "I'm eighteen."

"That's not what I mean." Professor Elm's tone changed, just enough that Ravina noticed.

"The main roads around New Bark are safe, comparatively speaking. Rangers patrol themand other travelers use them."

He opened a door leading into one of the laboratory's smaller rooms. "But they're still wild routes."

Ravina looked inside and saw three Poké Balls that rested on a padded tray.

Professor Elm continued. "Most wild Pokémon avoid people." He picked up one of the balls. "Most."

Mrs. Elm leaned against the doorway behind them. "You don't need to be frightened of them."

"No." Professor Elm shook his head. "But you do need to respect them."

Ravina's eyes drifted toward the Poké Balls. "So you're lending me one?"

"Wait, if your lending me one, why not just give me one of your Pokémon." Ravina asked pointedly at Nostus who’s first response was a raised eyebrow.

"Ravina, my team is a pack of monsters..."

"Exactly! You have six!"

"Six veteran Pokémon who've spent years developing very strict opinions about whose orders they'll follow."

Ravina folded her arms. "...I'm your daughter."

"Which means they love you." Nostus smiled. "It doesn't mean they respect you as a trainer."

Ravina's ears lowered. "...Rude."

"Besides, they're all girls. It's not as though I've got spare Eggs lying around."

"Then what am I supposed to do?"

Nostus nodded toward the ball in Professor Elm's hand

"Start where I did."

Ravina puffed out her cheeks.

"...Fine."

Nostus grinned.

"There's my little Pokémon Master."

"Don't patronize me."

Professor Elm smiled. "Ahem, now that's sorted." He set the ball down again. "These three have been raised here as part of my research."

"On evolution?" Ravina asked, still looking at the trio of pokeballs.

"Among other things." His expression softened. "But they're not laboratory equipment."

Ravina turned away from the balls to look at him quizzically

"They need partners."

That surprised her. "You mean... permanently?"

"If both of you are comfortable with it." Professor Elm smiled. "Pokémon partnerships aren't supposed to begin with paperwork…" From behind the small girl, Nostus cleared her throat, causing Professor Elm to wince. "...Although apparently they do involve paperwork."

"They absolutely do." Nostus folded her arms. "Especially when the professor providing the Pokémon hasn't updated his transfer forms since-"

"Nostus." Mrs. Elm gently touched her arm. "Let her meet them first."

Nostus looked at Ravina and then smiled. "Fair."

Professor Elm gratefully turned back toward the tray. "Right." He picked up the first ball. "Let's start here."

New Bark was already awake when Ravina stepped outside, she noted that the town looked different in morning light.

Yesterday it had been somewhere she'd arrived, today it felt more like somewhere she might actually be staying.

Shopkeepers rolled awnings over their windows. A cyclist passed with a basket full of parcels strapped behind his seat. A pair of children hurried toward the shoreline carrying fishing rods twice their height.

Ravina took the road toward Professor Elm's laboratory, whistling as she walked. She was almost there when she noticed the boy.

He stood outside the fence, red hair, dark clothes, arms folded, He wasn't watching the road, He was watching the laboratory, More specifically...one of its windows.

Ravina slowed, he didn't look like a local, at least, not one she'd seen yesterday.

Ravina’s Pokémon Adventure (HGSS) Chapter 2.1

Poke Ravina start town5

Chapter 2

The First Partner

Travel Journal — Day 2

Mum said Professor Elm only needed one small favour.

I've learned that when adults say “small favour,” they usually mean something that somehow takes the entire day.

Still... I get to meet one of Professor Elm's Pokémon today, So I suppose I can't complain too much.

Morning came quietly to New Bark Town.

Ravina woke to gulls calling somewhere beyond the houses and the low, steady hush of waves rolling against the coast.

For several seconds she simply stared at the unfamiliar ceiling before she remembered.

Johto, New Bark, Professor Elm, and whatever mysterious errand her mother had volunteered her for.

She groaned softly and rolled onto her side from downstairs. She could hear the unmistakable sound of cupboards opening, ceramic touching ceramic, and someone moving around with far too much energy for this early in the morning.

That could only be Nostus.

By the time Ravina reached the kitchen, her mother was already dressed for work. Her white coat hung open over her clothes, a mug of coffee rested in one hand, and several thick folders had somehow appeared across the dining table overnight.

Each one had been labeled, Some had colored tabs, One even had a handwritten index taped neatly to its cover.

Ravina stopped halfway into the room. "...You've been awake for how long?"

Nostus glanced toward the clock. "Long enough."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you're getting."

Ravina wandered toward the cupboards. "You've been here one day."

"An Astute Observation."

"And you've already reorganized Professor Elm's paperwork."

"Not reorganized." Nostus took another sip. "Triaged."

Ravina stared. "That sounds worse."

"It is."

She found some bread and dropped two slices into the toaster. "So how bad is it?"

Nostus's expression became very still. "...There is a drawer in his office labeled 'Important Things.'"

Ravina waited. "And?"

"It contains receipts, three research proposals, an expired ferry ticket, half a sandwich wrapper and a birthday card he forgot to send four years ago."

Ravina snorted. "You like him already."

"Professionally, he terrifies me."

"Same thing."

Nostus's mouth twitched. "Mrs. Elm asked if you'd come by once you're ready."

"For the errand?"

"Mhm."

"What am I actually doing?"

"Professor Elm can explain it."

Ravina narrowed her eyes. "You know."

"I do."

"And you're not telling me."

"I am practicing restraint."

"That's very mature of you."

"I thought so."

Ravina retrieved her toast and then paused. "How far am I going?"

"Several hours if you walk at a sensible pace."

That got her attention. "...Several?"

"Mr. Pokémon lives beyond Cherrygrove."

Ravina stared at her. "You neglected to mention the part where the 'small favour' involves leaving town."

"I assumed the travelling part would improve your opinion of it." Nostus smiled over her coffee. "You came to Johto to see Johto, remember?"

"I came because you came to Johto."

"Details."

Ravina sighed dramatically. "Fine." She took a bite of toast. "But if I'm eaten by something in the woods, I'm haunting you."

"I'd expect nothing less."
