Poke Ravina AZa 2

Chapter 33

Proof

Ravina’s Travel Journal — Day 34

Today was supposed to be normal, this was apparently my first mistake.

Good things:

  • Cinder is getting much better at turning with Flame Wheel.
  • Nikola continues her malicious campaign to become less fluffy.
  • Toni can still make her little light.

Bad things:

Kurt came into the café today, Maizie's Slowpoke is missing. So are others.

He thinks the café might be involved because some of their deliveries use the road near the Well.

Problem: He doesn't actually have proof, Lauren made that very clear.

Very calmly and very reasonably. Which was somehow deeply irritating.

Kurt left furious because everyone wants evidence before they act.

Bugsy looked guilty enough to crawl under the table.
She said she is going to look into it.

I hope she does.
I hope Kurt gives people enough time to help.
I don't think he will.

Chapter 33.1

By morning, Ravina's head had finally abandoned its vendetta for yesterday's choices.

Mostly.

She discovered this by swinging her legs over the bed, waiting for the room to perform its usual pirouette, and experiencing only mild disappointment when everything remained stubbornly in place.

"No stabbing," she announced, testing her voice.

Cinder, draped across the floor like a furry rug, cracked one orange-red eye.

"No throbbing." she added, as his eyes narrowed, studying her. "And no mysterious portals to the depths of my psyche."

From the ceiling, Victor's voice dripped with mock tragedy.

"A setback. I was preparing promotional materials."

Ravina rolled to face him, head propped on her hand.

Victor floated upside down in the corner, a particularly self-satisfied purple lantern.

"One day," she informed him, "I'll discover your particular phobia."

"Death proved disappointingly ineffective."

"Indifference?"

Victor drew back, wounded.

"Beast."

Morning light striped across the bed as Ravina sat up, a slow smile curving her lips.

Movement immediately answered.

Nikola unfurled from her blanket, a shiver of current whispering through cream fleece as she stretched. Something about her shape had shifted again, a subtle lengthening in the legs, a steadier balance that wasn't there yesterday.

Ravina's eyes narrowed.

Nikola went rigid, ears sweeping backward.

"You're doing it again."

The Mareep's fleece crackled warningly.

"Growing taller."

A crisp snap of static emphasized the unimpressed bleat.

"And losing that poof."

Ravina raised both hands defensively. "Observation. Not critique."

Nikola's fleece continued to bristle.

"Observation with deep emotional investment."

More static popped.

"Concern bordering on parental panic?"

Cinder shoved his face beneath his foreleg.

Owlbert, perched atop the wardrobe, emitted a single clipped hoot, precisely the tone that meant you've earned your fate.

A disturbance at the foot of the blankets announced Toni's arrival, a tiny ruler emerging from inside the blanket pile that made her cotton fortress at the foot of the bed.

She'd placed herself there, of course, as a small yellow head popped up first, two determined hands gripping the blanket edge. PINK.

"Morning, trouble."

The Togepi scrambled across the mattress, propelled by stubby legs, and collapsed against Ravina's hip like a shipwrecked sailor finding shore. WARM.

"Yep. Same heat source as yesterday."

Cinder rumbled low beside them.

Toni swiveled. ORANGE WARM.

"I see how it is." Ravina's fingers slid beneath Cinder's jaw, finding purchase in cream fur. He pressed into the touch, releasing tension gradually. Yesterday's anxiety still lingered like stubborn fog, but the morning sun was burning it off, bit by bit.

Ravina understood. Her reckless experiment had frightened all of them, Victor most deeply, she suspected. His usual bravado felt fragile now. When she turned to him, his ethereal eyes locked onto hers instantly.

"Another groundbreaking exercise in trainer accountability on today's schedule?" he asked, purple haze contracted slightly.

"No."

"An attempt at experimental haunting?"

"No."

"Lick a Thunder Stone?"

Ravina's stare cut across the room.

Nikola froze mid-bleat.

Owlbert's head swiveled 180 degrees with unnerving precision.

Toni suddenly became intensely interested, round eyes darting between Victor and any potentially sparkly objects.

Ravina pointed at him sharply. "Stop putting ideas in the baby's head."

Victor pressed a spectral hand to his orb. "I would never corrupt innocence."

MINE? Toni's concept echoed in Ravina's mind, tiny hands already reaching.

"No."

LIGHT? Toni’s thought followed, attention shifting toward Victor's purple glow.

"Definitely no."

Nikola moved decisively, placing her fleece-dusted body between Toni and Victor like a woolen barrier.

"Thank you," Ravina murmured.

Nikola gave Victor a warning bleat.

"Madam," Victor replied with wounded dignity, "I am merely an artist."

Her tail bulb flashed brightly.

"A misunderstood artist."

Another warning flash.

Victor retreated, his theatrical pride palpably bruised.

Ravina leaned against the doorframe, watching her team disperse into familiar patterns. Toni attempted to ingest a spoon with serious concentration while Nikola tugged at a blanket corner, creating a makeshift nest. Cinder stretched with low, lazy grunts, orange eyes blinking against morning light through the window. Owlbert pivoted precisely on his perch, tracking time more than movement.

Normal.

Today demanded ordinary. A deliberate embrace of routine.

No doors to nowhere. No sudden nosebleeds. No psychic assaults that made her brain feel like cracking glass.

Just coffee. Some basic training drills. Drop her Pokémon at the Center while she worked a café shift.

Simple.

Ravina really should have known better.

Chapter 33.2

Training remained deliberately unremarkable, which Ravina considered her own quiet victory against her impulsiveness. Cinder drilled his Flame Wheel technique with focused restraint. Today wasn't about raw power but precision, straight trajectory, decisive termination, controlled turning without momentum betraying him mid-motion. Progress manifested in gradual increments.

His first attempt blazed between two oak trunks in a rolling mantle of orange-red flame. At Ravina's signal, the fires quenched abruptly, his claws gouging into soil, bringing him to a halt barely three lengths past their target marker.

"Good!"

Cinder's ears perked instantly at her approval.

"Again."

He launched without hesitation.

By the third run, something shifted. He made the turn, not with dancer's grace nor fighter's finesse, but he made it. The flames hugged his form rather than spilling outward, his elongated body bending through the trajectory change with purpose rather than the clumsy sideways sliding that had plagued his early Quilava days.

Ravina's fist punched the air.

"Yes!"

Cinder trotted back wearing satisfaction so evident it might have glowed.

She dropped to one knee, cupping his face between both palms.

"Look at you."

Heat puffed against her cheeks in response.

"Still not allowed to get smug."

Orange eyes narrowed with mock offense.

"Okay. Moderately smug."

He accepted this compromise with what she registered as reasonable dignity.

Bugsy's assessment still surprised her, not that she lacked insight, but how swiftly she'd diagnosed Cinder's evolution issues from across a field after thirty seconds of observation. Ravina wondered what would unfold in an actual gym battle, anticipation tangled with nerves. Soon. Not today.

Nikola focused on Thunder Wave precision, containing bursts that no longer made Ravina's hair bristle. Owlbert practiced controlled takeoffs from precarious perches. Victor was explicitly banned from new technique development; his protests bordered on melodramatic while Toni absorbed everything, which meant Ravina spent much of the session monitoring the hatchling.

The tiny Pokémon parked herself between Nikola and Ravina, gaze following each motion intensely. When Nikola's tail pulsed with controlled electricity, Toni's expression brightened.

LIGHT.

"Correct."

Nikola's light subsided. Toni stared. Frowned. Small arms clenched.

A delicate spark flickered between her hands. Held for two breaths.

Then vanished.

Toni studied the empty space.

MINE LIGHT.

Ravina smiled.

"Always."

Victor floated closer.

"Your mysterious infant continues to violate the comforting boundaries of established taxonomy."

"You say that like you don't."

"I am perfectly taxonomic."

"You're a talking ball of poisonous ghost fog who smells like roses."

Victor paused.

"A particularly elegant example of my species."

Owlbert hooted.

Victor looked up.

"I refuse criticism from a clock."

Chapter 33.3

By early afternoon, Ravina had handed most of the team over to April.

Victor, officially included.

Unofficially… Ravina watched when April turned toward a Chansey carrying a stack of folded towels, Victor sank slowly through the floor.

Ravina did not react as April turned back and her eyes narrowed.

"Where's Victor?"

Ravina blinked. "Victor?"

"Yes, the Gastly."

"Oh. That Victor."

April folded her arms as Ravina smiled. "Bathroom?"

April stared.

"Ghost bathroom?"

"Ravina."

"Very exclusive."

April's expression did not change.

Behind the reception counter, Chansey stopped folding. Even Chansey looked unconvinced.

Ravina sighed. "He doesn't like staying put."

"I had noticed."

"He'll behave."

April continued staring.

Ravina lifted one hand. "He will behave well enough."

April glanced toward Cinder as he looked pointedly away. "You are all terrible accomplices."

Toni, seated comfortably within Nikola's fleece, raised both arms.

PINK GO.

"Yes," Ravina said, leaning down to kiss the top of Toni's head. "Pink has to work."

Toni's expression immediately darkened. NO.

"I know."

NO.

"I know."

Toni grabbed Ravina's finger. THERE.

"I'll come back."

The grip tightened.

Ravina crouched. "Just like yesterday."

Toni stared and Ravina touched one finger gently to the hatchling's shell.

"I go. April keeps everyone safe. Then I come back."

Toni considered as Cinder lowered his head beside her.

WARM.

Toni looked between them, then back to Ravina.

PINK THERE LATER.

Ravina's chest tightened. "Yeah."

She smiled. "Pink there later."

Toni released her and Ravina stood before she could change her mind and carry Toni into work under her apron.

April caught the look. "No."

"I didn't say anything."

"You were thinking loudly."

"I hate competent people."

"I know."
