Chapter 34
After Hours
Ravina’s Travel Journal — Day 35
Afternoon shift today.
Kurt's outburst yesterday is still bothering me.
Bugsy said she was going to ask around about the missing Slowpoke, so hopefully somebody finds something before Kurt decides to do something stupid.
Cinder's Flame Wheel is looking better.
Nikola is still suspiciously less fluffy.
Toni is still trying to make her little light.
Café tonight, then sleep… maybe after giving Cinder a special treat~
Hopefully a boring day for once.

Chapter 34.1
The Slowpoke Café had settled back into routine, a transition that felt jarring after yesterday's storm.
Ordinary resumed with an almost insulting insistence.
Steam ribboned from teacups. Pastry display shelves filled and emptied like rhythmic breaths. Customers conducted conversations in hushed murmurs, their laughter artificially bright against the lingering shadow.
The little pink Slowpoke ornaments sat between shakers, unchanged by accusations. Ravina found herself tracking their positions, each tiny figure a reminder of absence.
Her memory replayed a flash of blue ribbon against startling pink. Maizie's companion, a patient creature whose stillness had seemed to anchor the grove itself. Just... gone.
Silence stretched. Bugsy's morning had been lost to Ranger reports, her usual research desk abandoned for official inquiries. Kurt's absence amplified everything.
An angry Kurt would have stormed back through those doors, righteous fury preceding him. This quiet Kurt unsettled her, felt like pressure building behind closed doors, the calm before something breaks.
"That section has been polished three times."
Ravina's hand stilled mid-swipe. Selene stood across the counter, arms folded with predatory stillness.
A glance confirmed it: the polished wood gleamed with an almost indecent shine, reflecting the café's soft pink lighting like still water.
"I value thoroughness."
"You value distraction while your hands work on autopilot."
"Both are marketable skills."
Selene's hand extended, palm open.
Ravina surrendered the cloth, the rough fabric feeling inconsequential between her fingertips.
"Break."
"My shift just began."
"You've been here two hours."
Ravina checked the clock. Time had indeed slipped away, disappearing into Kurt's accusations and Lauren's calm responses.
"Time remains suspicious."
Selene tilted her head toward the staff room. "Five minutes."
"Yes, ma'am."
Selene's pink eyes narrowed slightly, an expression Ravina had learned meant proceed with caution. She escaped before that look could develop into anything more dangerous.
Behind her, unnoticed by everyone except Ravina, a faint ribbon of purple mist slipped through the wall.

Chapter 34.2
Victor had mastered the art of concealed presence.
On paper, he resided at the Pokémon Center during Ravina's work hours.
In reality, he haunted her workplace, exploiting every structural deception the café offered. Its walls absorbed his purple mist; its ceilings concealed his movement; its floorboards became his passageways.
He operated under strict guidelines. Silence unless required. Visibility only when eyes were turned. Objects remained untouched. Temperature stayed constant. No theatrical appearances behind unsuspecting patrons. No whispered commentary during tea service... he repeatedly broke this one. The others, he obeyed with unnerving precision.
Selene remained unaware. Lauren suspected nothing and the café staff continued their routines oblivious to their spectral observer.
Yesterday's confrontation had sealed Ravina's resolve: she valued having something the café didn't know about.
Cup clasped between palms, Ravina stared into the water as if its surface might reveal answers. The break room hushed around her, silence thick enough to taste. Purple mist seeped through the cupboard's wood grain, ethereal eyes appearing without sound.
Ravina's eyebrow lifted in silent query.
Eyes vanished. Then his voice drifted from behind her chair, intimate as a secret.
"Kurt troubles you?"
Her expression stayed fixed, neutral. "Obviously."
"You believe him?"
Ravina rotated the cup, watching reflections dance. "I believe Slowpoke don't just vanish."
"Precise evasion."
Water swirled as her hands twisted. "I don't know if I believe..." The words caught. "I don't know."
There it was. The admission hung between them, fragile and inadequate.
Victor's voice thickened, adopting that particular conspiratorial tone reserved for moments he deemed profoundly insightful.
"You distrust the owner"
The phrasing lacked any accusation, it was simply a statement of fact delivered with unnerving certainty.
"Not exactly," Ravina countered, her fingers tightening around the ceramic cup. "I don't trust her."
"A distinction dripping with nuance."
"Two encounters don't make a relationship assessment, but they do establish patterns."
"And both patterns displeased you?"
"You're rubbing off on me."
"Alas," his whisper brushed against her ear, "corruption by association is my specialty."
A genuine smile broke through despite herself. The break room door clicked open nearby.
By the time the sound registered, Victor had evaporated completely, leaving behind only the faint scent of roses and cold air.
Selene pushed the door open, her movements flowing as silently as a hunting predator stalking prey. She didn't knock; she entered. Time served at her discretion.
"Break over."
Ravina rose automatically, spine straightening.
"You see? Five minutes."
Selene's pink eyes held a glint of something unreadable as she stepped aside, gesturing for Ravina to precede her.
"That was six minutes."
"Rebellion." Ravina offered a small grin as she passed.
Selene's mouth quirked almost imperceptibly at the corner. "Try not to overthrow the establishment before closing."
As Ravina re-entered the café, polished floors absorbing her steps, she felt rather than saw Victor's presence recede completely into the walls like a shadow losing its source of light.

Chapter 34.3
The afternoon bled into evening, the light at the windows shifting from gold to pink before finally surrendering to the interior lamps.
The dinner crowd remained sparse, a quiet hum against the usual rush. Ravina found comfort in the lull, soft conversations, gentle clink of porcelain, the murmur of the kitchen, warm sugar scent lingering in the air.
Bugsy never came. Ravina told herself this was good, that the Gym Leader was investigating, not just waiting for reports. At the Pokémon Center, her team would be waiting, Cinder by the door, Toni nestled between Nikola's legs despite the Mareep's pretended indifference, Owlbert watching the clock with red unblinking eyes. Twenty minutes until closing. As normal as things got these days.
Selene emerged from the kitchen carrying a clipboard with purpose, her movements silent as a predator's approach.
"Ravina."
"That tone means labor, doesn't it?" Ravina replied without looking up from the table she was wiping down.
"Your powers of observation continue to impress."
"I have excellent instincts when it comes to impending drudgery."
"Storeroom."
Ravina accepted the clipboard, its edge cool against her palm. A short inventory list had been clipped beneath it.
"Dry stock arrived late. I need the front shelves replenished before morning."
Ravina scanned the list. Tea tins, napkins, berry syrup, powdered sugar, sealed pastry ingredients. Nothing that would require her attention beyond basic placement.
"How glamorous."
"You wanted money."
"I've made terrible choices," Ravina sighed dramatically.
"Apparently," Selene replied without missing a beat, already turning toward another task.
Selene gestured toward the rear corridor. "Stockroom three. Boxes with blue strips to the front prep shelves."
"Understood."
"If you're not done by close, leave the rest for morning."
Ravina saluted. "Your faith in me is overwhelming."
"I've witnessed your stacking techniques."
"Six boxes. Six success stories."
"Two boxes kissed the floor."
"Efficient descent."
Selene's pink eyes remained unreadable. Ravina grinned before turning down the corridor. The fluorescent lights hummed above, their sterile glow doing little to dispel the growing shadows as evening pressed against the windows. Footsteps echoed against concrete walls until they faded behind the storeroom door.

Chapter 34.4
Stockroom three stretched back farther than Ravina anticipated, its depth creating an almost cavernous feel. Not vast, but deep enough that shadows clung to the far corners.
Metal shelving towered along both walls, creating narrow aisles. Rows of sealed cartons, dry goods, cleaning supplies, stacks of pastel Slowpoke-themed merchandise, rose to chest height in places. A single fluorescent tube hummed overhead, casting harsh light that made the shadows deeper still.
The door, when Ravina pushed it open, felt unexpectedly heavy, solid as a cellar entrance rather than a pantry. She wedged it open with her foot while consulting the clipboard.
"Blue stripe..."
Naturally. A matching carton sat near the very back of the aisle.
As she moved between the shelves, Victor materialized through the concrete wall, a silent drift of purple mist forming only his eyes and faint outline in the dim light.
Ravina shot him a look. "Behave."
He dissolved behind a tower of napkin packages without a sound.
She crouched, fingers finding purchase beneath the box's edge. It settled against her palms with surprising weight.
"There you go."
She shifted her grip, prepared to lift...
THUNK.
The heavy door slammed shut behind her, the sound echoing in the sudden darkness.
Ravina's breath hitched.
One heartbeat stretched tight. Two.
The carton slipped from her grasp. A percussive thud echoed in the sudden confinement.
She crossed the narrow space in three lunging strides, fingers closing around the cold metal handle. It resisted, locked fast.
Her knuckles turned white.
"Selene!"
Her voice bounced off concrete walls.
She rattled the door handle. The mechanism held firm, unmoved.
"Hey!"
Silence answered, thick and absolute.
From the corner of her eye, Victor's form coalesced completely. No dramatic entrance. His usual theatricality vanished, replaced by something cold and sharp.
"Muse."
Ravina pivoted toward him.
That single word hung heavy in the air. His gaseous form had compressed, pulling tight around his orb, betraying an intensity she rarely saw.
"What?"
Victor drifted upward, his essence extending into wispy tendrils that explored the darkness like searching nerves.
Then they recoiled violently.
"Something is very wrong."
Ravina's breath caught in her throat.
The scent, sweet and insidious, coated the back of her tongue before she could consciously register it. Faint notes of sterile medicine lurked beneath, triggering a nose-wrinkling response.
Victor lunged forward, purple vapor blooming like ink in water as it expanded toward her face. His voice held unusual urgency.
"I can neutralize it."
Ravina's gaze fixed on his ethereal form. "What is it?"
"I don't know."
Admission hung heavier than ignorance.
Victor's haze swirled outward, pulling the noxious air toward himself like a living vacuum cleaner. But Ravina's heart already hammered against her ribs, each beat marking another inhale of whatever this was.
Trapped. Poison unknown. No response from beyond the thick door.
Yesterday's confrontation snapped into place with sickening clarity, Kurt's fury over missing Slowpoke, late-night deliveries, Lauren's practiced calm about her staff traveling near the Well.
A terrible picture formed.
"Oh."
Victor's spectral eyes narrowed. "I profoundly dislike that sound."
Ravina's gaze shifted between the sealed door and her ghostly companion. An idea began to form. A truly terrible one.
