Chapter 4.1
The scent of baking bread wove through the inn's open window, warm and yeasty, as Ravina stirred beneath the covers. Morning light painted stripes across the rumpled sheets where she blinked herself awake.
"...Morning already?" Her voice emerged raspy with sleep as a familiar warmth settled against her side.
Cinder remained asleep, a compact fire-mouse curled against her hip. His tiny paws twitched in some dream-world adventure, drawing a soft smile from Ravina.
"Wore yourself out yesterday, didn't you?" One crimson eye slid open at her voice. Cinder stretched with a yawn before scrambling onto her stomach, a deliberate invasion of personal space that made her grunt.
"Oof. Good morning to you too." His cheerful chirrup vibrated against her ribs as he made himself comfortable.
They'd reached the inn late yesterday, both exhausted from the journey. The room wasn't luxurious, but clean with comfortable beds and a window overlooking a courtyard garden. The proprietor had provided a small basket of berries for Cinder, which the Fire-type had devoured before collapsing into sleep.
Now, with morning fully upon them, Ravina contemplated the day's task. "Professor Elm said Mr. Pokémon lives just outside town, right?" Cinder's nose twitched, but he remained nestled against her warmth. "So we just need to find him, drop off this package, and maybe we'll have time to explore a bit before heading back."
Cinder made no move to get up, his small body radiating heat through her shirt.
"You're very comfortable here, aren't you?" Her fingers traced along the soft fur at the base of his neck. A contented purr rumbled from him, the vibrations soothing against her skin.
Ravina laughed softly. "I could stay here all day too, but we have a job to do." She tried to sit up, but Cinder immediately burrowed closer, tiny flames flickering in protest. "Hey now, no fair using your charm against me."
He peeked up at her with innocent eyes, his expression the perfect picture of a Pokémon who had done nothing wrong.
"Oh, you're trouble." She scratched behind his ears, earning a happy trill. "Ten more minutes, then we're up."
Cinder chirped his agreement, already half-asleep again as Ravina settled back against the pillows, her hand resting on his warm back. The morning could wait a little longer.

Chapter 4.2
Morning air thick with salt and baking yeast wrapped around Ravina as she stepped from the inn. Cherrygrove had woken up with purpose: shopkeepers rolled up their awnings with practiced motions, fishing boats cut patterns across the harbor, and cyclists threaded through the growing crowds like needles through fabric. Near the bakery, a flash of white feathers, a bold Wingull, snatched a pastry from a distracted customer's hand and launched into flight. The baker's furious shout sent him sprinting down the street in hot pursuit.
Cinder's eyes widened at the chaos, his tiny flames flickering with amusement.
"Welcome to city life," Ravina murmured, adjusting her satchel against her hip. "But we've got more road ahead of us today."

Chapter 4.3
Route 30 peeled away from Cherrygrove's morning energy like a quiet whisper. The rhythmic crunch of stone beneath her feet softened to earth as the town's orderly geometry dissolved into wilder patterns. Salt-laced air surrendered to the rich perfume of damp soil and crushed vegetation, the gulls' cries replaced by the layered symphony of unseen birds in the canopy above.
Morning jeweled the tall grass flanking the path, each blade bearing tiny water droplets that caught the sun like scattered diamonds. Ahead, weathered wood marked the transition:
ROUTE 30
North to Mr. Pokémon's House
Cinder's nose twitched, sampling the myriad scents carried on the gentle breeze as Ravina adjusted her satchel. "Not much further now." Cinder's enthusiastic chirrup vibrated against her leg as they continued northward.

Chapter 4.4
Minutes later, a voice cut through the morning calm.
"Hey!"
Ravina's gaze lifted to a teenager waving enthusiastically from beside the path. He couldn't have been much older than her, a baseball cap sat crooked on his head, and a Rattata perched proudly on one shoulder.
"First time on Route 30?" he called, approaching with a casual stride.
"It is."
"I'm Joey!" He proudly pointed to his partner. "And this is Rattata!"
The little purple Pokémon puffed out its chest, whiskers twitching.
Ravina smiled. "I'm Ravina."
"Cynda!"
"And this is Cinder."
Joey crouched, his eyes widening. "Oh wow, a Cyndaquil, you don't see many of those around here."
"He was Professor Elm's."
Joey's head snapped up. "...Seriously?"
"On loan."
He whistled, low and appreciative. "Guess that means you're starting the Gym Challenge?"
"...Eventually, maybe," Ravina shrugged. "Today's just an errand."
"Haha, maybe in the future then~" He laughed, scratching the back of his neck. "...So..."
Ravina tilted her head. "So?"
"You wanna battle?"
There it was. Her first challenge. Just another trainer asking a perfectly ordinary question, yet her pulse quickened.
She glanced down at Cinder. "What do you think?"
Before she'd finished speaking, Cinder stepped forward, the tiny flames on his back flaring to life with purpose.
Joey's grin widened. "I'll take that as a yes."

Chapter 4.5
The battle unfolded on a compact clearing where the grass had been trampled flat by previous encounters. Sunlight dappled through the canopy above, casting shifting patterns across the makeshift arena as Joey and Ravina positioned themselves on opposite sides.
Joey's arm shot out with exaggerated flair. "Rattata!"
With an energetic bound, the Normal-type leapt into position, whiskers twitching with anticipation. "Ready!"
Ravina drew a steadying breath, the morning air feeling suddenly charged. Professor Elm's instructions echoed in her mind, now feeling less like theory and more like a test she wasn't prepared for.
She swallowed against the dryness in her throat. "...Cinder."
Her Fire-type's head turned, orange-red eyes meeting hers.
"You've got this."
His response came as a confident chirp, tiny flames flickering to life along his back. That simple display of faith somehow steadied her nerves more than her own could.

Chapter 4.6
"Begin!" Joey's voice cracked with enthusiasm as Rattata launched forward. "Quick Attack!"
The purple blur crossed the clearing in a heartbeat, a streak of motion against the dappled sunlight. Cinder barely had time to brace before impact sent him tumbling backward. He rolled twice, then sprang back to his feet with a shake of his head.
Joey blinked. "...Nice recovery."
Ravina exhaled slowly. "Stay calm," she whispered to herself. "Cinder, don't chase him."
Joey grinned. "Good luck with that." Rattata was already circling, a purple dart far too fast for Cinder to match in open pursuit.
"If we can't outrun him..." Ravina's thoughts raced. "Then make him come to us."
Cinder glanced back, understanding dawning in his orange-red eyes. He planted his feet firmly, his small body coiled like a spring.
Rattata darted closer, then away again, testing responses and searching for an opening.
Joey's brow furrowed. "...What's she planning?" Rattata lunged forward, committing to another attack.
"Now!" Ravina called the instant Rattata committed. "Smokescreen!"
A thick plume of black smoke erupted across the clearing, swallowing the Normal-type whole.
"What?" Joey's eyes widened as a surprised squeak came from within the cloud. Rattata stumbled out, blinking furiously and shaking his head.
"There! Tackle!"
Cinder erupted from the smoke like a small cannonball, connecting cleanly with Rattata's side. The Normal-type yelped as the impact sent him rolling. As the smoke drifted away, Joey recalled his partner with a genuine smile.
"...Nice."
Ravina blinked. "...That's it?"
He laughed. "Yeah, Rattata's done. You won."
For a moment, she simply stood there, processing. "We... we won!" She looked toward Cinder, who was already bounding across the clearing. Instead of celebrating alone, he launched himself directly into her arms.
She laughed as she caught him, stumbling back slightly from his momentum. "You were amazing." Cinder responded with a pleased trill, nuzzling into her shoulder. The warmth from his flames seeped gently through her shirt, a comforting heat that she found herself leaning into.

Chapter 4.7
Joey ambled over, settling Rattata on his shoulder where the Pokémon preened. "You've got good instincts."
"Mostly guessing," Ravina admitted, scratching Cinder behind the ears.
"So was I when I started." Joey fished in his pocket. "My number?"
Ravina blinked. "...Your phone number?"
"My Rattata's gonna be the strongest," he declared with unshakable confidence. "When that happens... I'm calling everybody."
She laughed, the sound bright and genuine. "...Deal."
After exchanging Pokégear numbers, Joey waved and headed south. Ravina watched him go before turning to Cinder.
"...First battle." Cinder nodded proudly. "...First win." Another nod as she smiled.
"...I definitely think I picked the right partner."
Cinder froze mid-nuzzle, then looked up. The air between them shifted, It wasn't because she'd praised his strength, It was because she'd quietly acknowledged something neither had said aloud since leaving New Bark.
He wasn't just Professor Elm's Cyndaquil anymore, He was her partner. The little Fire-type leaned forward and gently bumped his forehead against hers as Ravina closed her eyes and returned the gesture.
"Come on, partner." She stood, shouldering her satchel. "Mr. Pokémon is waiting."

Chapter 4.8
Joey watched Ravina's figure shrink down the winding path until the morning mist swallowed her completely. He stood motionless for several heartbeats, the rhythmic crunch of her footsteps fading into silence. Then, with deliberate slowness, he pulled out his Pokégear, thumb hovering over the contact list before meeting his partner's expectant gaze.
A long, charged silence stretched between them.
"...I got her number."
Rattata's whiskers twitched, then a high-pitched squeak burst from him as he practically vibrated with excitement.
"I KNOW!" Joey pumped his fist in the air, his voice echoing through the trees as his Rattata bounced triumphantly on his shoulder.
