Chapter 3
The Road to Cherrygrove
Ravina’s Travel Journal — Day 2
Professor Elm said the walk to Cherrygrove should only take a few hours.
Cinder has already stopped three times to investigate bugs.
We've travelled approximately twelve minutes.

Chapter 3.1
The road west from New Bark unfurled in quiet tranquility, weathered stone walls dividing rolling fields of tall grass from narrow walking paths. Rows of trees swayed in rhythmic patterns beneath the spring breeze, their new leaves whispering secrets to the passing air. Somewhere in the distance, a flock of Pidgey scattered into the sky like startled confetti before settling again only a little farther away as Ravina adjusted the strap of her satchel.
"So..." She glanced down at her new companion. "It's just us now."
Cinder trotted happily beside her, having insisted on walking after only a few minutes in her arms. Every now and then he'd wander a little ahead, nose twitching as he investigated some fascinating scent only Pokémon seemed able to detect, his small flames flickering intermittently along his back.
Whenever the distance between them grew beyond his comfort zone, he'd pause abruptly, looking back over his shoulder to confirm Ravina's presence before continuing his exploration.
Ravina smiled, touched by the gesture. "Making sure I haven't wandered off?"
Cinder responded with a cheerful chirp, his tail giving a little wag.
"I'll take that as a yes."

Chapter 3.2
Travel proved nothing like Ravina had envisioned. The route demanded constant vigilance, gnarled roots threatened to trip the unwary, bird Pokémon nested in low branches that occasionally swooped to defend their territory, and weathered signs cautioned travelers to steer clear of breeding grounds.
Twice they yielded to Rangers on Arcanine mounts, the massive Fire-types moving with practiced grace along the uneven path. Each rider offered a courteous nod, but one paused, her sharp eyes taking in Cinder's positioning.
"New partner?" she asked, voice warm with recognition.
Ravina nodded, surprised. "Is it that obvious?"
The Ranger's gaze shifted between them. "He hasn't once looked away from you."
Glancing down, Ravina found Cinder watching the exchange rather than exploring the roadside. The Ranger chuckled. "That's the best kind of start."

Chapter 3.3
Soon the paved path dissolved into stretches of tall grass swaying in the breeze, each stalk catching the light like emerald blades. The wind whispered through them, creating waves that rolled across the landscape.
Cinder's trot slowed to a cautious walk, his head tilting as his ears twitched. Ravina noticed the change immediately, her steps matching his. "Something caught your attention?"
The grass rustled again, followed by another whisper of movement. Dark shapes flitted between the stalks, gone before Ravina could fully register them. Wild Pokémon, curious about intruders in their domain.
Ravina instinctively softened her voice. "They're shadowing us." Cinder nodded once, his flames dormant, but his posture remained coiled and ready.
For what felt like ages, unseen observers tracked their journey. Brown fur flashed briefly between stalks, then vanished. Tiny eyes caught the sunlight like scattered gems before disappearing. When one drew too close, Cinder would merely turn his head, and the watcher would melt back into the green sea.
Ravina found comfort in their silent escort. "...Professor Elm was right about needing a partner." Cinder looked up at her. "I'd have missed all of this completely."
He puffed out his chest, flames flickering briefly with pride. "Your senses are sharper than mine."

Chapter 3.4
Around midday they reached a shallow stream crossing, where a smooth wooden bridge arched gracefully over the water. Ravina groaned as she stretched, her muscles protesting the morning's journey. "My feet are already complaining."
Cinder immediately wandered toward the water's edge, nose twitching as he sniffed cautiously. He jumped backward with a startled yelp when a Magikarp suddenly broke the surface with a vigorous splash.
Ravina burst into laughter. "Oh, brave guardian."
Cinder looked deeply offended, emitting a tiny grumbling noise that sounded remarkably like a complaint.
"Don't worry, it startled me too." She reassured him as she knelt beside the stream. "Let's eat."
Lunch consisted of simple sandwiches prepared by Nostus that morning. When Ravina offered Cinder a portion, he sniffed it carefully before accepting, then quietly carried his piece several feet away before eating.
Ravina watched with curiosity. "...You're making sure nobody steals it?" Cinder nodded with complete seriousness. "...Fair enough."

Chapter 3.5
After lunch they rested beneath the shade of a broad oak. The afternoon had grown pleasantly warm, dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy. Cinder wandered back over and settled beside Ravina with a contented sigh, his small body fitting perfectly against her side.
She leaned against the trunk, and without thinking, her hand drifted toward him, slow strokes along the smooth fur at the back of his neck. He closed his eyes, the tiny flames on his back flickered lazily in response to her touch.
"...Comfortable?" A happy little chirrup answered, vibrating against her palm.
Ravina smiled to herself. Yesterday, he'd been Professor Elm's Pokémon. Today he'd already started feeling like hers, because he'd chosen to trust her. That thought settled warmly in her chest, a quiet certainty blooming beneath the afternoon sun.

Chapter 3.6
From the crest of a gentle hill, the first glimpse of Cherrygrove unfolded before them. Red rooftops punctuated the skyline, their terracotta tiles warm against the afternoon sun. Beyond, a harbor glimmered where distant Wingull cries drifted inland on salt-kissed breezes. Smoke curled lazily from chimneys, painting soft gray strokes against the blue sky.
The town sprawled larger than New Bark, its streets bustling with activity that buzzed like a beehive awakening.
Ravina stopped walking, her eyes widening at the sight. "...Wow."
Cinder scrambled onto a nearby stone, his small frame silhouetted against the view as he stared with equal wonder.
"It really is a city."
Ravina crouched beside her Fire-type, the afternoon light catching the subtle flicker of his dormant flames. "What do you think?"
He tilted his head toward the harbor, then met her gaze with an excited squeak that vibrated with enthusiasm.
"I agree." She laughed, ruffling the fur between his ears. "I think we're going to like it here."
Together, trainer and Pokémon began their descent down the hill, unaware that before the next day ended, they would encounter a collector of rare Pokémon, meet one of the world's most renowned Professors, and receive an unexpected second research assignment, sparking a chain of events that would ripple far beyond anything they could imagine.
For now, however, Cherrygrove City waited, and as the sun began its slow descent, they needed a place to stay.
