A World Beyond New Bark

Chapter 5.1
The front garden presented meticulous order—herb rows standing at military attention, their fragrant leaves releasing scents with each breeze. A stone path, smooth and gray, cut through the green like a ribbon, winding toward the cottage where weathered wood glowed honey-gold in afternoon light. To one side, a vegetable patch displayed perfect geometry, while bird feeders hung from ancient branches, creating a constant flutter of wings as Pidgey and Hoothoot vied for position.
Ravina halted before the weathered oak door, its surface polished to a warm sheen by years of use. She inhaled the garden's fragrance, then looked down at Cinder.
"...Ready?"
The Fire-type's head tilted, orange-red eyes meeting hers. He gave a confident chirp, tiny flames flickering briefly along his back.
"Good answer."
Three firm knocks sounded against the wood, the impact absorbed by its sturdy construction. Almost immediately, footsteps approached from within, each step carrying purpose. The door swung inward with a soft creak of hinges.
A man with silver hair caught the light like spun moonlight, his face crinkling around eyes that held genuine warmth. His smile seemed to invite the sunshine into the cottage with him.
"You must be Elm's courier!"
"I am."
He laughed, a rich sound that filled the doorway. "And punctual, too! I was beginning to wonder whether the roads had distracted you."
Ravina couldn't help but return his smile. "They nearly did. I've met some very interesting people."
"Johto has already begun treating you properly." His gaze shifted to Cinder, whose flames had dimmed to embers. "Ah, and you've brought a proper Fire-type. Excellent choice for wandering paths." He stepped aside, his movements unhurried. "Please, come in."

Chapter 5.2
The cottage interior defied expectations. Bookshelves dominated nearly every wall, while glass display cabinets showcased an eclectic collection: fossils, ancient Poké Balls, carved stone tablets, and artifacts from across regions. One cabinet housed unusually shaped feathers, another displayed antique Poké Ball mechanisms.
Another voice drifted from the adjoining study. "Another guest?" An older man entered, adjusting his glasses. His calm, kindly expression held unmistakable energy.
His gaze moved from Cinder to Ravina, eyebrows rising. "...Well, you must be Elm's newest assistant."
Ravina blinked, recognizing the face from television and magazines. "...Professor Oak?"
"The one and only." He smiled, extending a hand. "A pleasure to meet you."

Chapter 5.3
Over tea, the conversation flowed with unexpected ease. Ravina had braced herself for a lecture, but Professor Oak spoke to her as an equal, his curiosity focused not on theory but on her bond with Cinder.
"How has your Cyndaquil adjusted to traveling with you?"
Ravina cradled her warm mug. "It's only been a day, but he's settled in remarkably well."
"Any particular behaviors you've noticed?"
She glanced down at the Fire-type nestled against her leg. "He keeps looking back to make sure I haven't wandered off."
Oak's eyes crinkled with understanding. "That's an excellent sign. He's accepted you as part of his social structure."
Cinder puffed up his chest, flames flickering with pride at being the topic of discussion.

Chapter 5.4
The tea had nearly vanished when Ravina recalled her purpose. "Oh!" She jolted, reaching into her satchel. "Professor Elm asked me to deliver this."
Mr. Pokémon's eyes lit up as he accepted the parcel. "Wonderful! I've been anticipating these reference documents."
With careful precision, he unwrapped the package before vanishing into another room. The sound of rattling and rustling drifted out, followed by his return moments later holding something much smaller.
Cradled between both palms rested an egg, cream-colored with vibrant red and blue triangular markings arranged in intricate patterns.
Ravina leaned forward. "...It's beautiful."
Mr. Pokémon nodded, his fingers tracing the shell's surface. "Months of study, yet nobody can identify its species. It hasn't hatched, shown no deterioration, and yet..." His smile held genuine wonder. "...it's unquestionably alive."
He extended the egg carefully. "I'd like Professor Elm to continue the research. His facilities are best suited to solve this mystery."
Ravina accepted it with both hands, the shell radiating warmth against her skin, almost comforting in its intensity.
"I'll make sure it reaches him safely."

Chapter 5.5
Professor Oak watched quietly, then reached into his briefcase. "I wonder..." he murmured, producing a compact red electronic device with a blank screen.
"What's that?" Ravina asked.
"A Pokédex." Oak turned it over thoughtfully. "This one hasn't been assigned yet." He offered it to her. "Since you're helping Elm, perhaps you'd assist me as well?"
Ravina accepted it automatically. "I don't understand."
Oak smiled. "The Pokédex records Pokémon behavior, habitats, and growth. Every trainer observes something different. The more data we gather, the better we understand our world."
He looked directly at her. "I'm not asking you to complete it—just contribute. Record what you encounter, learn from them. Every entry helps."
Ravina glanced from the blank screen to Cinder and back to Oak. "...I'd like that."
"Excellent," Oak nodded approvingly. "Consider yourself my newest field assistant."
Ravina laughed softly. "I've only been Elm's assistant for two days and already I've got another job."
"The best researchers are usually very busy," Oak smiled.

Chapter 5.6
The conversation flowed like travelers sharing discoveries around a campfire. Professor Oak recounted tales from his Kanto expeditions, rare Pokémon found in unlikely places, eccentric researchers in remote outposts. Mr. Pokémon added his own strange findings from decades of exploration, weaving a tapestry of a world alive with wonder.
Ravina listened, her fingers absently stroking Cinder's fur while carefully guarding her own cross-dimensional adventures. Each tale expanded her view: Professor Elm's lab wasn't isolated in sleepy New Bark; it was one node in a vast network of passionate researchers and adventurous trainers across regions.
She'd left home as a courier. Now, clutching a Pokédex and mysterious egg, she realized something profound had shifted. She hadn't just stepped onto a path; she'd joined a living community where every journey contributed to shared understanding of their world.

Chapter 5.7
Oak checked his watch. "Goodness, time's flown."
Mr. Pokémon chuckled. "Off somewhere important?"
"My radio show." Oak sighed theatrically. "Producer's threatening pre-recorded episodes if I'm late again."
Ravina raised an eyebrow. "Producer?"
Oak's smile widened. "Professor Oak's Pokémon Talk from Goldenrod. Weekly discoveries, trainer questions, occasional debates."
Mr. Pokémon grinned. "You mean you spend an hour proving everyone else wrong."
Oak chuckled. "Occasionally." He gathered his briefcase. "A pleasure meeting you, Ravina. Hope our paths cross again. Fill that Pokédex for me!"
"I'll do my best, sir!" Ravina replied with a grin.

Chapter 5.8
Together they stepped outside into the dappled afternoon light. Oak's driver stood waiting beside a sleek League vehicle parked beneath the ancient trees, its metallic finish gleaming in the filtered sunlight. Before climbing in, Oak turned back, his silver hair catching the light.
"You've made an excellent choice."
Ravina blinked. "My choice?"
He gestured toward Cinder, who stood alert at her side. "No, Cyndaquil made an excellent choice." His eyes crinkled with a knowing smile. "Don't disappoint him."
The vehicle rolled silently down the woodland road, its tires crunching softly on the gravel as it headed toward Goldenrod. Silence settled over the cottage once more, broken only by the distant call of a Pidgey and the gentle rustle of leaves in the afternoon breeze.

Chapter 5.9
Mr. Pokémon stood framed in his doorway, hand raised in farewell. "Safe travels. I'll let Professor Elm know the Egg is on its way."
"I'll be there before sunset."
"I've no doubt." His voice followed them as he retreated inside.
Ravina and Cinder had just reached the garden path's end when her Pokégear vibrated with insistent urgency. The cheerful chime seemed jarringly out of place in the forest's quiet.
She managed a smile. "Probably Mum checking whether I've eaten." She answered the call. "Hello?"
Professor Elm's voice shattered the peace. "Ravina!?"
She froze mid-step. "Professor?"
"Where are you!?"
"...I just left Mr. Pokémon's house."
A long breath of relief, then terror. "Listen to me carefully. Come back immediately."
Ravina's smile vanished. "What happened?"
A pause stretched between them. "...Someone broke into the laboratory."
The forest fell silent. Ravina instinctively cradled the Mystery Egg closer. Cinder's ears snapped upright, his relaxed posture evaporating.
Professor Elm's voice trembled. "Please. Hurry."
The line went dead.
Seconds stretched. Ravina looked down at Cinder. "...We're going home."
Without another word, they broke into a run, the peaceful journey north forgotten as Johto's quiet roads suddenly carried an urgency they'd never known before..
